I’ve been planning a build for a while now and I’ve been reading a ton on these forums. I’m not a fan of custom building for the sake of custom building and choosing exotic options just because, but in this case I think custom is what I need.
My ideal guitar tone and music style is the late 60’s Beatles stuff. Bright and clean, but able to get that angry bark when driven. So an Epi Casino is the obvious best choice. I’ve played a few, including the elitist, and the tone is exactly what I’m after. The only reason I don’t own one is the feel. I’m just not a fan of the Gibson style wide chunky necks. I really only ever feel at home on a Fender style bolt on. I prefer the string response on the slightly longer scale length, as well.
This brings me to the Mooncaster. Semi-hollow, but with a fender feeling bolt on neck. Obviously there is a substantial difference between a semi hollow Mooncaster and a fully hollow Casino, and I’m completely okay with that, but I’d like to get as close as possible, tone wise.
I’m planning on P90’s, probably Fralin, and either a CBS Strat Neck or an Hombre (just for the aesthetic, unless someone thinks it would negatively impact the sound I’m going for).
My real question lies in the wood choice. I’m assuming that the semi hollow construction would make the guitar brighter than the casino is, as would the scale length. To counteract that would it be wise to choose mahogany for the body, with a maple top? What about the neck? Maple or mahogany? Would a mahogany neck on a mahogany body get me closer to the sound I’m after it would it be too muddy?
Let me know what you guys think, and thanks in advance!
