mini humbuckers

I had a Bill Lawrence mini once that I used to use in a LP Deluxe.
Cream with 2 blades. I used it in the bridge position. Switched in in and out of that guitar a few times.
It had a very warm midrange. Much warmer than the stock 1973 Deluxe pickups.
It would do controlled feed back very nicely. It was a howler for sure.
The bad part was that it wouldn't jangle like the stock pickup.

Both guitar and pickup are gone now.

Good thread. Did anyone of note ever really play a 70's Deluxe? Compared to a humbucker, they  can sound thin and harsh.
I recoemmend the GFS LIl' Cruncher. Its an overwound mini that sounds warm and fat...almost too warm, but does live up to its name with some nice crunch, but never gets nasally like a stock Minibucker tends to want to do. Its  Inexpensive as pickups go. I have one in the neck of my Telebastard, and I love it.  Perfect Tele neck pickup, unless your going for the jangley stock  Tele sound.

that's cool... I forgot to add some info here though. I'm looking for a good pickup for jazz and blues with a really great clean tone for a possible L5S build. I was asking about mini buckers because, well, their buckers and being hum free is one of my big priorities for a pickup, so if you knew of a good noiseless p-90 please tell me about that as well

Duncan Phat Cat for sure for pure Jazz/blues. Thats if you have a humbucker space in the guitar. Sound almost  actually better than a stock P90 if thats possible. They do make noiseless P90's i'm pretty sure. Check out Guitar fetish. Thier pickups are pretty good ,especially for the price, and they have a wide range.
Another pickup is the -mm, forget waht they call it- but its a P90, and a Humbucker and a single coil all in one pickup.
For Jazz, IMO nothing beats a PAF.

I don't think I'd go the Minibucker route for Jazz. Lets see what else others say.

I agree with jerryjg, you should check out the Guitar Fetish Pickups.  I was a real skeptic just because of the price until I heard a set of P90’s through my Pro Reverb and Leslie 145 about a week ago.  I have to say compared to the set of Gibson pickups on a Les Paul R6 that I tested they blew the Gibson pickups away hands down. They had great harmonic structure, made the amp sing and they were in an Epiphone SG: a real cheap guitar compared to the R6

We are waiting to test a set of mini humbuckers when we get the right guitar for them.

I hated the mini-humbuckers that came with my late 70's gibson LP deluxe gold top.  Probably the worst pickups that I ever used.  Don't get anything that claims to be just like the old Gibson ones.

Oh - one of the guitarists from thin lizzy used an LP deluxe with mini-buckers.  As well as Pete Townshend...

Yes. I had a '73 LP Deluxe for about 10 or 12 yrs. and never found them to be harsh. I also had a few LP customs and 1 Standard and all of those pickups weren't as smooth ( when overdriving an amp ) I always found the large HB pups to be a bit more edgy than the mini s.

I never put the Bill Lawrence mini in the neck but I'd guess it would have been perfect for a jazz tone totally clean.
It was very solid and warm in the bridge position.

Have you looked at  EMG? They seem to have a lot of options for different sounding pickups.

sorry but i wouldn't touch emg with a ten foot pole for this kind of a project. I'm goin all passive/low output for some really sweet clean tones.

I have been considering this pup in the middle with a pair of Lollar P-90's in the bridge and neck.  I have never heard anything but good regarding Lollars.
I like the sound clips I hear and the staff are really great about answering questions.
Shoot them an email and you will have a reply the next day.  Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

hOLY mACKERAL! I'm sold. I think I'd like to switch out my GFS Mini  neck pickup on my Tele for one of these, although the GFS " lil Cruncher"  sounds pretty similar and costs waay less.
What i really wish is that someone would make a Tele Steel Bridgeplate cut for a Mini 'Bucker.

The lollar mini or firebird has been on my radar for a while, too. He def makes a good product, if you don't mine paying - though he's not quite in the Kinman / Joe Barden "bend over" realm, thank God.

Just to throw my .02 in, I have a single coil set of GFS and couldn't be more pleased with them. I'd just say to not let the price scare you off.

Allen Collins from Skynyrd played minibuckers too
