matching the back and neck colors?

This is my first build and I have a question on finishes for the guitar back and neck. I haven’t finalized anything yet; but leaning toward doing a Tele replacement body with mahogany core and flame maple lam top. Neck would be mahogany with a rosewood fingerboard. I’m looking at doing a Tiger’s Eye Dye on the top.

Here’s my problem: I’d like the mahogany back and Mahogany neck to match. I don’t see an option for neck finishes other than clear. Ideally I would like the back to be stained with darker transparent stain that complements the front tiger eye dye and also have the neck done in the same stain.

To make it even more complex, I’d like an accent line along the edge, but when I add that into the mix it deletes the clear finish option. I can’t tell if am asking for something that is physically impossible or if the web site configuration tool is somehow broken for me.

Basically I am asking for any suggestion/thoughts regarding matching the back and neck colors?

A neck's back or headstock in matching color is an off menu option that costs extra, meaning it's not available through the sites builders and you have to call or mail the Warmoth sales staff.

Also, I'm assuming with "accent line" you mean the natural masked edges; yes, with that edge treatment you can't choose a clear back, they contradict each other.

To add on, there is no “stain”. Maple tops can by dye (rubbed on intense color) or transparent (evenly applied transparent color that allows you to see the wood grain).

You probably want a Tiger’s Eye dye top with transparent brown, amber or vintage tint back and natural masked edges (although the transparent back can be anything, those kind of align with the Tiger eye dye). You’ll then call in to request the same transparent color as your neck finish.

It costs more but you can have a matching headstock veneer (matching the body) with the same burst. That really makes it look like a custom guitar and I highly recommend it. You can also request a black headstock like Gibson or just the same color as the rest of the neck.

This is not a build in progress but just asking for info. Should be general discussion I have requested the thread to be moved.

If you want to have anything other than clear on the back, and say black, or a color that matches the body on any part of the neck, you'll have to call Warmoth and speak to a human. They are nice humans. Have no fear. If out of the USA you can send an email. Phone number and email are on the website.

If you're asking for suggestions on matching a mahogany body and neck, I'd suggest starting with the classic transparent red for the body, and back of neck, with black on the headstock and a black pickguard, dark rosewood fretboard and pearloid fretboard inlays.

Also, I can recommend the book 1001 guitars to play before you die, you can get it on the internet cheap and you'll see bunches of guitars and how they were finished and get a ton of ideas.

We can do colored finishes on necks if you call in. As far as matching the body, solid colors will match if body and neck are ordered at the same time. Transparent finishes can vary because the wood they are sprayed over affects the final color, but they are usually reasonably close.

On bodies, if you choose Tiger's Eye Dye you get several options for a Back Color:
  • Black
  • Black (Burst over)
  • Transparent Brown (Burst over)
  • Tobacco Burst
  • Tobacco Burst (Burst over)
If you choose Black, ask for a Black neck finish. If you choose either Transparent Brown or Tobacco Burst, ask for Transparent Brown on the neck. (Tobacco Burst ends with Transparent Brown around the perimeter.)

The Clear finish option disappears because a Masked Edge is essentially a thin stripe of Clear finish, and a thin stripe of Clear next to a back color of Clear means there is no line. It ends up looking like the Clear back finish just starts closer to the top.

In order for a Masked Edge to look right there has to be color on both sides of it.
