I saw Tom Waits open for Mull around 1975 at the Troubadour in L.A. He was billed as "Martin Mull and His Fabulous Furniture". The stage was set with an easy chair, a rug, and some other living room type accoutrements as I recall. At one point Mull pulled out a vibrator and started playing slide guitar with it. He then turned the vibrator on, started playing "Purple Haze", then looked up and said "so that's how Jimi did it!"
