Maple or mahogony?

So I want to make a Les Paul style guitar or soloist I'm between the 2. Either way I know I want the body to have mahogany and the fretboard to be ebony. Thing is I love the feel of maple as the neck it's much slicker. But I was wondering if having a maple neck on a mahogany body will sound alot different than mahogany on mahogany. I figure people will have good experience here.

Care to elaborate?

Maple and Mahogany both need a hard finish, so they feel the same.

Well I used to have an SG with a mahogany neck and it felt like it wasn't as smooth. Granted it was painted over so I don't know if that had to do with it. And I had a Jackson with a maple neck which felt alot better.

having owned a gibson SG and a warmoth maple neck i have to say that i LOVE the maple. i hated the SG's painted neck. just got gross and sticky after playing. i've got 2 different warmoth maple necks with the satin nitro finish and love them both.

of course as line6man said they'll both have to have finishes, so i don't think the feel is what you should be as worried about but more the sound. you could make a soloist sound/feel closer to your gibson with a 24.75" mahogany neck, or have a les paul thats close to a mahogany bodied strat with a 25.5" maple neck. really depends on what you want to do with it i guess, i think both are cool :icon_biggrin:

The only dif between a painted neck and a clearcoated neck is color.

And if it's on mahogany or maple, I would think they should feel the same

the difference here isnt between the woods, its between the types of finishes. The only way you would notice a difference between them is if you didnt fill the mahogany before you cleared it, I love the porous feel.

I don't think that finished maple feels like finished mahogany.  There's elasticity to the finish, and maple always feels harder to me.  5% chance I'm full of it, but I don't care either way, so I'm stating my experience.

the difference between a nitro neck and a gloss neck is HUGE. i can't stand gloss, but nitro is perfect for me

Les Paul = Mahogany 24.75"

/end of story

Well - end of the wrong story then  :toothy11: Some LP's do have a maple neck.

Yes, but I think LP = Mahogany neck :) It's as what you want if you think in LP, if you want a maple neck is some of the weird 70's or 80's ideas or special order...

Warmoth's satin finish is very, very smooth no matter what wood it is put on. Choose the wood that LOOKS and SOUNDS best to you.

i love the gloss finish on my mahogany/ebony neck. i think it feels comparable to the gloss that was on the maple/maple fender neck that came before it.

Both of my Warmoth's are mahogany bodies with maple necks, one with an ebony board. I wouldn't change a thing, love them both.  :icon_thumright:
