I'm at the outset of my Gibson-ish RD build, using a Warmoth mahogany body blank & mahogany neck, and I'm wanting to end up with a finish that matches the headstock to body. I'm also wanting to get a light cherry dye/stain coloring to the mahogany, and a burst edge to the body & possibly the headstock. Over all of that will go many, many thin coats of TruOil, then wax to polish. I've read before that Warmoth seals the necks a little, and when I called to order, Dan confirmed this, and suggested an alcohol based dye would work ok.
For the burst, I was thinking of getting a clear grain filler and a dark grain filler - the clear would go in the middle of the front, a couple coats, taking care not to get any near the edges. Then the dark would be used all over the rest of the body. I figure the effect would be subtle, but still effective at getting an indistinct line from the dark edge to the lighter middle. Some of the spray finish methods for bursts are things I'd like to try, but not on this guitar.
Am I on crack for thinking this could work? I'll have some scrap mahogany once I cut the body blank, so I plan to do some tests, but any input is very appreciated. Also, would anyone suggest I do the dye before the grainfill or after? Obviously, I'll get different results, but what are the pros & cons?
