LSR Nut Install

Any tips on first-time LSR nut installation? Warnings? Sage advice?

When you drill the screw holes to mount the thing, it's important that you mark your bit with a bit of masking tape or something so you don't drill too deep. Also, don't forget to wax your screws before you try threading them in. Finally, it's critical that you use the proper screwdriver. I believe it's an #00 Phillips, but check me on that. Failure to use the right driver will almost certainly result in breaking the screw or stripping the head.

You're probably going to need a couple of the shims on each side, so put them in to start with.

If you have a caliper, get some business cards and measure them.  Sooner or later you'll find one that is 0.010".  Hold the E string (either one) down at the 3rd fret with your thumb, use the card as a feeler to see if it will pass easily, snug, or not at all over the first fret.  If it is snug, that is about where you want the height of the nut.  The LSR is adjustable with 0.005" or 0.010" shims that come with it.  Once you get the nut adjusted the way I listed, that is about as close as you can get with an LSR.  In my experience with LSR's, it works great at that height.

You can use either a #00 or a #0. In my Canary/Ebony I found that the #0 worked better since it's such a hard wood. The driver with the bigger head pushed the screw easier. And the heads do strip EASILY. Go SLOW.

I used one .1 shim and one .05 shim on each side to get to the proper height. It's easier if you put them in to start with, but you can always put the nut in, string it up and check the height before you put the screws in.

I also made sure that the nut was aligned properly by checking the spacing of the strings from the edges of the fretboard before I screwed it down. YMMV.
