We've been encountering random app pool restarts on one of our web servers.  I've scoured the event log and have been running perfmon trying to flush out the culprit with no luck.  We've also added some custom reporting code but still have yet to uncover anything conclusive.

Do we have an IIS gurus here?  Experience with debug diagnostics?

Thanks!

+1 on that  - start running Apache on Linux.

However, I suspect that you've got too much invested in the current technology to switch now.

Just for those who dont know....

Right out of the box... most linux incarnations do web serving, FTP serving, mail serving, DNS, and will also act as primary domain controller for a windows network - including active directory emulation.... and much much more.  You can set up the file system to co-exist as its own, or mutually exist as a windows file system or other file systems.  The only issue I have with my Linux server is not the servier, or the Linux.... neither ever get rebooted unless there's a kernel update - or the backup battery fails with an extended outage - its my @#$@ "fantastic" DSL line that is a total mess in any sort of weather.  The linux side of things is rock, rock, rock solid.

Ha, plus its free, and its faster than anything MS has~

Uh, guys I'd really like to avoid the OS holy wars here.  I've been around that block more than a few times and have worked in everything from CICS/VTAM, Vax VMS, 'Nix variants, Mac shops and hardcore Windows shops.  There are problems/benefits under any OS and none of them are perfect for all needs.

CB I got an extra comp lyin arround doing nothing, I can install linux and use as a server? So I can host My own, crummy website that no one will ever go to? What version of linux do I need to get?

Sorry Wyliee, was not tryin to steal this thread

You're running .NET on your site now, could be a lot of things. Have you checked the IIS logs (not found in Event Logs)? More than likely a coding issue peaking out your resources causing a reset. I work in a heavy .NET environment, PM me if you want. I have access to a lot of resources (People, etc)...

Yeah, cross referenced IIS logs against event logs and perfmon reports.  Nothing is matching up.  I see a bunch of little things, but nothing is adding up.  No regular patterns either.  Needle in a haystack scenario.  You might be seeing a note from me.

you should buy some of the intel software addons for MS VSP. They are pretty dang good for code troubleshooting etc.

I might have no idea what you're talking about.. so if I don't, ignore me. I just work for a software reseller and know the bits I know.  :tard:

My old gf's dad works at Microsoft, and I'm actually still on great terms with her and her whole family. As in, I'm even allowed in the house.

as long as he's technical and not sales.. their sales force usually doesn't know what they're selling.  :laughing7:

I actually don't remember his job there :p

Last times I asked him for help (quite a while ago), he knew what he was doing. And he even advised me not to try it :p
I've gotten better, though. :p
