Agathis australis, commonly known as the kauri, is a coniferous tree found north of 38°S in the northern districts of New Zealand's North Island. It is the largest (by volume) but not tallest species of tree in New Zealand, standing up to 50m tall in the emergent layer above the forest's main canopy. The tree has smooth bark and small oval leaves. Other common names to distinguish A. australis from other members of the genus are southern kauri and New Zealand kauri.

Hot dang.  I already had a Kauri wood body and didn't know it?

Isn't Brazilian Rosewood illegal to harvest anymore, but yet there is an abundance of it in the US? :dontknow:

Apparently so and they wont ship Brazilian rosewood outside the USA, so why they can harvest it is anyones guess.

New Zealand Kauri you just cant get it unless its old stock laying around,
or unless like in my instance you buy ancient Kauri.

AprioriMark: apparently some genus are stringy and too much resin in them
i wouldnt know all the variables from the different countries but we do have one here grows in the Rainforest in Queensland
but i dont know that they harvest it or that its any good for guitars..

To obtain Brazilian Rosewood today, it needs to be wood that was both harvested and exported before the ban or wood that was harvested pre-ban and has the required documentation of its provenance to permit exporting today.
The Brazilians and the international community take this ban very seriously. In October of  2007, 350 federal officers in Brazil arrested 23 people and served 67 search and seizure warrants for the illegal extraction and exporting of this endangered species.

So just because it's illegal to harvest in New Zealand, doesn't mean there's none that wasn't brought here before the ban...In fact there's plenty of New Zealand Kauri for sale over here...

As i said

New Zealand Kauri you just cant get it unless its old stock laying around

that pretty much covers all endagered species.

They say there's probably enough Ancient Kauri to last 30yrs, i will be switching to Aussie timber next.

The Blackwood on OzziePete's Maton looks good, and their is plenty of other great looking timbers like Silky Oak and Jarrah.  Some of them have amazing grain patterns.

Ya, that's basically what I was meaning. That it would be old stock already in the states...

What is Aussie timber? Or is that just a general phrase for wood from Australia... :dontknow:

Yep - just Australian timber

I have some pics of some stock from Tassie coming to me by the end of the week
so i can have a look at  the slabs.

Maton use mostly Australian tonewoods

I may use Tassie oak/Mountain Ash(a pine hardwood) its plentyful and a queensland maple neck which is of not a maple at all

some timbers
Old growth reclaimed timber include Tasmanian Blackwood, Red Myrtle, & Blackhearted Sasafrass - Tasmanian Mountain Ash - Wattle.
Limited supply: King Billy - Huon Pine - Celery Top.

Huon pine i would like a blank of it look really nice but its scarce
