Just a rant

I'm thinking lately that parts should be more standardized. Personally, I think it would benefit each company to have parts that can easily be interchanged with others. For example, if you want to switch from a Wilkinson to a Floyd Rose, the studs should line up in the same place, and be the same size, so you can easily change the studs and switch the trem. Tuners should all be the same circumference so you can switch from Fenders to Schallers to Sperzel whatever. As it stands right now if you're not satisfied with what you have you're pretty much screwed. I'd like to have an LSR roller nut but my nut width is 15/8. Why doesn't Fender make the roller nut in that size?

sorry, just venting

for the most part, a significant amount of bass parts are already standardized just like this. the exceptions are with a few of the bridge companies (many do utilize the Fender standard), but their mounting patter compliments the unique features of that bridge that would be greatly diminished if a standard 5-in-a-row hole pattern was to be used

same said for tuners - two flavors: BML based sizes use a 1/2" post in a 11/16" hole, and GB7 based sizes use a 3/8" post in a 9/16" hole

all the best,

R

Thanks for the reply. I guess it's this whole tremolo problem I'm having right now. If the posts fit I'd rip this Wilkinson out right now and drop in a Floyd. The Wilkinson is actually made by Gotoh and I have a Gotoh Floyd here that I could put in. All I need is for the distance between the posts to match, which it doesn't, of course.

Hehe!! I posted an introduction in the general discussion area. If you read that you'll see that I actually started out on bass after seeing Steve Harris of Iron Maiden and Rudy Sarzo of Quiet Riot, c'mon, they were cool in their time. Anyway, I wanted to play bass, then I saw Eddie Van Halen and that changed everything.

I think somewhere inside I'm still a bassist

It might tend to discourage innovation, of any kind... like, the guy who decides to make two-post tremolos in the first place (Thank you!) would get in TROUBLE with you (or whoever the enforcers are) for switching away from the six little screws. Leo Fender would've got arrested and sent to Guantanamo for even varying from the "standard" of the Telecaster bridge enough for there to BE tremolo Fenders. I'd personally rather see variations-with-mistakes than the locked-in-stone Fender-vs-Gibson dichotomy we've devolved to. For example, one of the unintended side effects of the Vintage Worship that comes along with the standardization is that there are $5000 guitars with bent sheetmetal Kluson tuners - and that just ain't right.

I personally feel the "original" Floyd Rose is woefully due for an upgrade - but it's standardized now. You can buy aftermarket Ibanez Edge tremolos which are a vastly superior unit, but they don't fit the standard Floyd holes that everyone knows to use, because it's not the "standard."

Thanks for the reply, Stubhead. You know, all I really wish is that the distance between the studs was standard so I could rip out this Wilkinson and put in a Floyd. As it stands now, if I want to switch, my guitar is going to need to be drilled. Don't wanna go down that road. I'm just pissin' and moaning anyway. If this wasn't my guitar I wouldn't care. hehe!!! :laughing7:
