We lost one of the great legends 25 years ago today:  Mr. Stevie Ray Vaughan...
I was lucky enough to have seen him 4 times before his untimely death and everyone a memorable show!
Anybody have any SRV stories to tell?
RIP Stevie Ray :occasion14:

I miss him like I miss Randy Rhoads.

Stevie RAy Vaughan was the only guitarist I ever heard and decided, "I want to play just like that."  I later wised up as to what a dead-end it is to have the goal of replicating someone else's stuff (and also became more acutely aware of my own shortcomings), but for a few years he meant everything to me, musically.

My only SRV "story" is the story of being thwarted in my attempt to see him, the one chance I had:

I had tickets to see SRV & Double Trouble in Phoenix in the late 1980's, and when my army base went on alert that week, I was locked down and could not go.  Rats.

Time has passed, and my musical world has gotten larger, and my tastes have evolved.  Still, what a loss.  I can still hardly listen to "Lenny" without getting a little choked.

I had the good fortune to see Stevie at UC Davis. He was a force, I do not know how to put it in words other than to quote what I said to my friends as we left the show. I said, " I always wished I had the opportunity to see Hendrix and tonight my dream came true because I was in the presence of one of the greatest guitar players on the planet."

I will never forget hearing the news of his loss and I thank God I had the opportunity to stand on my tiptoes for an entire show while he worked his magic.

Mr. Bagman,  real bummer that you were not able to attend the show in Phoenix!  I believe that was likely the last show that I saw Stevie?  It would have been 89' and I had just moved to Phoenix a couple months before the show.  I have some great pics that a friend shot from that show.  I am trying to find them and will post if I do...

This link leads to a site that shows the "Top 10 Historic Performances" of SRV.

Some great stuff here of SRV playing with Jeff Beck, Lonnie Mack, BB King, Albert Collins, Santana, and some assorted shows including the Unplugged.  Has some audio of one of the closing jams from the last show.  Also includes one of my favorite, SRV and brother Jimmie doing Pipeline on the double neck.  Gotta love it...

I remember in '85m my guitar teacher at the time ( an old coot whom had been teaching guitar since the late 40's) handed me a tape of Soul to Soul. I was just blown away. I wasn't much into the blues at the time, but that tape altered my musical taste forever, I quickly went out and bought every tape of Stevie I could find. Later that year I got a chance to see him perform at the Will Rogers coliseum in FT. Worth and was just mesmerized.  When he was killed in 1990 it was a sad day, Texas had lost something special. I'm fortunate enough to be able to go on the SRV memorial ride every year in Dallas. It's always something special, a great tribute to Stevie.

R.I.P. Stevie

Thanks for sharing these SRV stories. I wouldn't have guessed it was 25 years since he left us.

This is going to sound freaky perhaps. But I was just thinking I remember thinking who is playing those blues bits on Bowie's Last Dance, as they caught my ear and was the first SRV I heard. This is the freaky part it just started playing on the radio...

I saw Pat Benatar & David Johansenn at the UC Davis Gym April/1982.

Small world!
