Just heard about these nifty things and have been researching then for about 2 hours now and am very intrigued about it.

I've since learned that it's pretty risky, and if you don't know what you're doing you can void your warranty and possibly harm the device, but if you back up everything you could restore your device to before you jailbroke it, also if the device is broken, the can wipe any trace of it being jailbroken and have it fixed under apple warranty still. I've also learnt that some apps that let you run apps (like weather or email) on your home lock screen or run multiple apps as once can drain your battery quickly or can react badly with other apps (thats probably when the s**t hits the fan).

I was wondering if anyone here has jailbroken their iDevice or if anyone knows the most reliable jailbreaking software, as there is a fair few different providers. I've heard some good things about redsn0w...

I've been running a jail broken iPhone 3g since they came out. There is plenty of jail breaking software out there that do it safely. Even if you mess up, you can reload your phone back to stock. Just save a backup in iTunes before you do anything.

What kind of apps are you running on it? I mainly just want the app for adobe flash player so I can watch videos that arent on the youtube site provided.

Cydia, Five-Column Spring Board (gives 5 icon buttons across instead of 4), Reflective Dock, Winter Board themes, Apple WIFI, Fading Apple loaders, Blue Apple signal bars, Apple Sliders, 3D gauge (battery gauge), User Wall paper, Transparent Dock, Fake Carrier logo (removes ATT at top and allows you to use custom word), etc, etc, etc.

What is the purpose of such an app?
Just something for the "tweakers". I could put "DbU", "Warmoth", etc as the carrier name if I wanted. Mine is actually "Vicious" which is the nickname of my street/strip car.

I still don't get it. Why pay money and take up precious memory for a stupid app that lets you rename the network's display name?  :icon_scratch:

In any case, I guess I'm not much of an app guy. :blob7:
This is my iphone:

"I see  :o", said the blind man!!  :icon_jokercolor:

All of that is free. That's the whole reason why people jail break their phone. I paid for none of that.

Apple was overturned in a court of law and it is now confirmed to be legal to modify and jail break your phone and it's software. Why do you think Apple fought it, they lose the ability to charge you $$$ for things like those apps that jail breaking gets you for free.  :icon_thumright:

So if I jailbreak an iPhone, I no longer have to pay for any of the apps in the app store?
I think there used to be a $500 GPS app in the app store. That would be free, too? :blob7:
I might have to look into this.

You still have to pay $$$ to have a data plan though, right?  My phone makes calls and texts people.  That's pretty much it.  I don't see myself getting anything fancier until data plans drop in price or I start making more money.

Yeah, you can do whatever you want with the phone, but your carrier still provides you service and bills you accordingly for it.

Making calls and texting people are the two things I don't do. :blob7:
There are a handful of people that I call and text, but everyone else in the world can contact me via email if there is any need to communicate.

That's not how it works, anything you want from Apple will cost you, although I have heard of jail break apps that can make app store items free, but I call that stealing.

There are plenty of free apps that become available after jail breaking through Cydia. All kinds of free open source apps, themes and tweaks put together by the iPhone community, some of which speed up your phone instead of slowing it down.

Thats why Apple and its devices are a joke. They screw the customer comming and going, and if we don't think you should have
something you won't get it.

F**k Apple.

Android FTW.

Superior in every way except for the taste of bullshit Apple force-feeds its customers.

Anger issues?  :toothy12:

So does that make Microsoft, Samsung, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile any better? They all have gimmics up their sleeves to protect their market share, software and devices.

There's a reason why Apple's #1 right now, it's because their stuff works and does what they say it does. Who else can really say it?

The whole point of this thread was about unlocking software that makes a great product that much better, not corporate politics.  :occasion14:

Honestly, I have to agree.  Apple seems to be pretty manipulative of it's customers.

The last is why I'm never buying another Apple product. Totally true.

May I ask how?

It's just that they seem to try waaaay too hard to get you to buy 10 products because you've bought one product.  And if something doesn't work right, it's like they design it so you can't fix it yourself because they have to do it.  Like how you can't just buy a new battery for your ipod (at least back when I had one) and stick it in because you can't even access the battery without taking the the ipod apart.  They made it pretty clear that you have to buy their brand of battery and have them install it for you.  And they charge a HELL of a lot for a battery.  Then also when I had my ipod, I wanted to use winamp because iTunes blows in my opinion, and that was made difficult because every time I had to attempt to fix something that was wrong with my ipod, the firmware update really made it seem like I HAD to use iTunes.  When it died (just after the warranty ran out, of course), the people at the Apple store were rude to me and told me that I broke it because I wasn't using their software and that I was probably shaking it all the time, to which I replied "Right, I was shaking it just like the dancing people in the ipod ads do."

You have to remember though, I come from a family of computer geeks.  We're not Mac people because we like the freedom to use whatever software we want and to tweak our machines however we want without interference from the company that made the system.  Apple doesn't like that type of attitude.

I'm not regretting my decision or anything, but it does shit me that EVERYTHING apart from the headphones and the supplies usb cable is an accessory which you have to pay a shitload for. I mean is common sense an courtesy to include a charger pack that plugs into the wall socket. Nope. Apple doesn't have either or include one.  :tard:
