Inlays on a fretted neck

Any ever put in inlays on a neck that was already fretted and finished?  I would imagine level sanding/finish would be the issue.

I have not done it myself, but I know it can be done.  The barbed wire inlay on Valentina was installed completely after the neck was finished and they run the entire length of the fingerboard.  There is a gentleman on this forum that goes by Cliff.  He has an inlay business and does really quality work.  I spoke with him about doing this and he refused to put any inlay on a finished neck that was below the 12th fret.  From the first to the twelfth was fine, but anything else was a no go...
