Thursday I took a slight detour and drove through Mission, KS to stop in at Vol. Knob's newly aquired jewelry store.  It's always enjoyable to put a face with someone from a board such as this.  He has a very nice store/business, and it was a lot of fun looking over and discussing what he's experiencing (I was in the trade, myself, for a number of years).  Exchanging local history (I lived 20 years in Mission), and what's on the local horizon was also interesting.  The best aspect of such an encounter is talking about music - and that we did.  I encourage anyone living in the Kansas City metro area to stop in to meet him and see his store.  He's not hard to miss - he's the well dressed, handsome man behind the curtain  :icon_biggrin:

I live in Lenexa, KS. Whereabouts is his store?

The name of the store is Missionhill Jewelry, and the address is 5832 Johnson Dr.  It's on the North side of the street next to a Chinese restaurant just West of Nall.  It's a compact store that's been there forever (as long as *I* can remember).  I bought my first ID bracelet there 40+ years ago.  Yeah......I'm a real ol' fart.

IF you're playing around knucklehead G - let me know.  I live in Raymore, MO, but am on the Kansas side all the time for business, family, and friends.  I occasionally go down to Knuckleheads and a couple other spots for blues jams.  I'm working in an attempt to put something together with a couple guys at present, and played last Summer with Knockneed Sally......a less than fulfilling experience (but decent folk).  You would need to arm yourself with weapon (bass OR...) of choice, and come prepared  :evil4:

All the talk of Kansas brings back fond memories. I lived in Chapman KS in 90-93 while my father was stationed at Ft. Riley.
Friendliest people 'round down there.

My grandmother is in Raymore, so I'm well familiar with the area. Farm on one side, meth on the other (Belton) and old people in the middle at Foxwood Springs retirement home.

What's funniest, is I'm pretty sure I've been to that Chinese place, but cannot for the life of me remember the name.

I lived in gilliam park, attended the art institute, and worked at temple slug from 1984-1988. Love gates & sons.

What ever happened to the grand emporium.. that was a great venue way back when.

I lived in Overland Park for a year while on a sprint project. I liked it, pretty nice survived one tornado too.

The building I work in is set up like the Wizard of Oz. There is literally a yellow brick road down the main hallway, as well as windmills all over the place. There are eight tornado shelters built into the place.

I swung by Vol. Knob's shop this morning with an eye out for some steel rings for the missus and myself. He was hanging out behind the counter in a snazzy suit, which apparently is odd for him as he has been seen many recently out dancing in the street in his snazzy suit to draw attention to his store. We didn't get much time to talk as some paying customers came in and I wasn't trying to distract him, but I will be heading back to pick up a set of ceramic or tungsten rings in the near future.

It was nice talking to a jewelry salesman that used terms I could understand. Forget karats and radiance, "This one is so metal!" communicates the idea much more clearly.

I've walked there. I'm at 87th and Gillette. Small world, right?

Ahh, ahh, KS.  Grew up there and went to KSU.  As far as KC BBQ, my vote goes to Bryants.  Love Gates too, as well as Zarda (the one I used to go to had a drive-thru...bonus!).

I'm bad, I've been so busy since we took over the store that I've hardly been on this board!  I hang my head in shame.  I didn't see this thread until today!

Thanks to both Slingbass and Knucklehead G for stopping in.  You gents are kickass, but next time bring a guitar!  Knucklehead, I had my faux Warlock, I neglected to pull it outa the back room!

And for the record, the best BBQ in the KC area is Gates.

Go ahead, laugh.  This actually works great.  It brings customers in every single time I do this.

Gates is amazing but for my money I drive a little east of the border into Lee's Summit, MO and go to the Hickory Pit. Can't beat it.
