I though that the Steve Morse Band's 1990 and 1991 releases "Southern Steel" and "Coast to Coast" were a high point in the whole instrumental guitar trio field, and to a large extent their later releases were just remakes of the same 8 or 10 song patterns. The new "Premier Guitar" has an interview in connection with the group Morse formed with Neal Morse, Dave LaRue, Mike Portnoy and Casey McPherson. It's one of those "supergroup" things like Satriani's, and it's clear that it's kind of a relief to the guitarist to have somebody else carry some weight.
Anyway, Morse was the original "hero" of John Petrucci, and in the now interview Morse is highly complimentary of Petrucci's technique. And I hear a bit of Petrucci influence flying here!:

The old guys who keep listening like Morse, Jeff Beck, and John McLaughlin... well, it maybe a long time till I buy anther Santana album just to hear the same 8 licks! :laughing3: David Gilmour is another one who's gotten better... it's tempting to just ride the train, but you become your own oldies band that way. "Comfortably Numb" wasn't any kind of big guitar hero song till long after the pig blew up.
