i decided to but my brothers squier strat to work on to get some practice for when i start my warmoth in the summer. i pulled off the pickgaurd and in the neck and bridge positions were humbucker routs where the single coils were.  :sign13: so iv decided to put some in. i cant decide on HSS or HSH for it. itll mostly be for lead cuz ill be scalloping the fingerboard.

anyone have ideas for some cheap humbuckers?
and if i should go for HSS or HSH?

thanks

HSH just for fun, why not. Bill Lawrence for great cheap pickups, especially the high output stuff if you're a shredder. If you don't feel like dealing with the potential hassle of that, just spend some time on Ebay and you can find used duncans and dimarzios for $50 or so a pop.

Never used the others but GFSs have are a steal in my experience, though I don't think I've tried any humbuckers from them

when i changed my pickguard/pups in my 93/94 MIM strat i found it to be routed SSH.  if it was HSH i'd definately go HH on it, but it's fine with 3 singles in it for now.

never gotten to try them, but i've heard good things about GFS pickups. i think a few members here have even used them for their warmoth projects. just goes to show you don't need expensive pickups to get a good sound i think! i think Marko and Dangerous both used them. hope i'm not naming anybody who hasn't!

yes, I have good experiences with GFS... I like their Lil Killers and their loudmouth pickups.
when it comes to budget pickups, I also had good experiences with Tonerider humbuckers. IronGear from England are great too.. I found that their Hot Slag is very similar to the Rio Grande BBQ

oh while you are on a budget, why don't you give "guitarpartresources" a try.. so we all know it is worth the 18 dollars:

I say stick with pickups you know are going to be good quality, like duncans or dimarzios or Bill Lawrence. On ebay or craigslist there is always a decent used selection - you can pick up a JB or a '59 for instance pretty easily for around 50 bucks. Then if you swap them out later, just re-bay them for roughly your money back.

I've had good and bad pickups from GFS, but never tried a humbucker from them, only strat and tele models.

just because im really low on money at the moment, im gonna try the guitar parts resource squier pickups a try, ill try to get pictures up asap

thanks for the help  :icon_thumright:
