How do P90s in a semi-hollow sound?

I have a great Reverend Warhawk solidbody with P90s that has this gorgeous crisp bell like tone. Clean, this thing just chimes. For crisp Indy/Alt riffs laden with delay and reverb it's killer.
I have HB equipped Sheraton II that I really dig for lead work (I use the neck pup for leads..LoL) and dirty chords. It's so woody and creamy, helped by some TI flats.

Now, I'm thinking of a semi-hollow P90 build - what kind of tone can I expect out of that combination? The Epi Casino comes to mind, but I've never played one.

I imagine that it might sound something like this:

ectually - i realize now that's a hollow body.

Might sound different  :icon_biggrin:

It can depend on the woods used and especially the pickups....

I build this Thinline a while back: ( http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=1294.0 ); has an RG BluesBar in the neck and an RG Fat Bastard in the bridge; with volume knob at 5 or less, can get tone similar to an old ES-330, wide open it just rips.

You'd probably want a less "hot", more vintage set of P90s than the RGs to get the sound you're looking for....

Just a few thoughts....

1. Nice gitfiddle there Jack!~

2. Asking anything about p90's is like asking generically about HB's.  Almost everyone knows there are wide variations in how HB's sound, but totally fail to realize that P90's are subject to just as much variation - depending on magnet, coil size (it varies!), how much wire, what size wire, pole material, you name it.  Just like the HB's got all that mojo magic to make them different, so do P90's.

3. A good set that is well balanced, not muddy sound great.  If they're overwound they might be a bit dark and lifeless in a semi hollow, better suited for a bright solid body.  On a traditional low coil P90 with AlNiCo II's, try and get something right about 7.75/8.00k ohms.  Over that and they really start to lose sparkle.  Under that, and they're better for the deeper bodies like ES-135's and such.

I think it sounds great.  But I'm biased.

Nice guitars!

I do appreciate there is wide variety in pickup materials and specs that create different sounds, I've just always mentally thought HBs for Semi-hollow and singles for Solid. I was curious as to mixing it up. Could that justify another guitar  :icon_tongue:

Haven't seen that one pulled out in a while, Jack.

That's what she said...

To actually contribute to the thread: generally P90s for hollow bodies is the original jazz guitar sound, so I think it will work great. CB makes good points on output/voicing. We should all listen to CB more :)
