How about this?

You might be able to get that sound without changing a thing on it. Depends on that particular guitar, your rig, and your skills.

IIRC early Mexi Strats were the same as American Strats in terms of wood quality.  Granted, every piece of wood is different, but it should get you in the ballpark.

The only big difference will be the neck contour.  The '57 RI has a contour similar to Warmoth's boatneck, V shaped.  You can always swap the neck out in the future though.  Otherwise the two guitars should be fairly similar.

I think it should, but remember, most of the tone comes from the amp. And pickups have the greatest impact on the guitar's tone.

I don't know if you already have a pickup choice in mind but my recommendation would be a set Lollar Blondes, they sound wonderful, much better than any American Standard guitar I've ever played. Just got them into my Warmoth Strat and can't believe how good they sound through my digital Marshall amp (MG50).

The bodies and necks were cut in Cali, then bussed mear miles to Mexico for finishing and assemebly.  Ahh....NAFTA.  Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it, but I'm almost sorry to say that I'm now considering a new mexican strat ... because it's new and I have more color options etc ... is that a bad idea or could I still swap out electronics and hardware and get the sound I'm after. The new mexi strats I heard on youtube didn't sound all that bad and I'm thinking with new pups a good amp and such it should at least be close to what I'm after.

As a side note I'm also considering a Brian May "red special"  ... don't know what kind of single coil strat sound I can get out of that but I really like Mays lead tone. I like the sound of his guitar in general actually ... anyone know about the Brian May guitar?

Thanks, you don't know how much this is appreciated.

New Mexi Strats are about $500USD right now.  If you're ditching the stock electronics, you're almost in Warmoth territory again.

You may want to try a Warmoth neck and an eBay Strat body (or a W sale body if you order by tomorrow) to keep the price down.

Brian May's tone never really relied on a good guitar, it was that cranked ac30 + treble boost that made it happen.

OK, Brian May's guitar is a special one, The guitar reputedly has a baseball bat sized neck profile, the body is made out of very seasoned oak wood (an old fireplace mantle or something like that), the pickups are Burns single coils that have been allegedly tweaked a bit and the wiring scheme allows for series connection (instead of the more popular parrallel connection between pickups) and in & out of phase settings. Add the Vox amps that he used in the studio and multi tracked to death (or live using about 12 AC30s cranked up! - google Live Aid performance from Queen and see the backline volume distort the camera's vision  :o) you can see that replicating his tone is going to cost a fair bit to get close. Not omitting his own unique soft touch on the neck.....

To get close you could buy a BM guitar from a company he set up to replicate his Red Special and then buy an AC15 or so to start on your way to getting some Brian May tone for recording or if going for live overkill, get a couple of AC30s and link them up.

The thing about the BM guitar is it is only a close replica to the original and in all fairness no one will ever sound like May exactly.

If you want to do it Warmoth style and get in the ballpark, you could get a LPS body - flat top, made in a heavy mahogany, dyed transparent red, then get a hold of some Burns pickups and find the schematic for how the BM guitar is wired up and set about routing the pickup & contro, cavities. Neck wise, you'd have to lump for a tree trunk of mahogany and a v shaped headstock. Maybe a rosewood fingerboard  - or ebony if you want to liven up the treble a bit and retain some sustain.

If you're ditching the electronics to start (and you really should also upgrade the bridge) a new MIM strat vs. a showcase model is not saving much at all over a Warmoth which is more like a custom shop quality.
especially if you're now just after a solid color and not specifically flame maple on alder or ash, there are a ton of nice bodies. Doesn't the sale end tomorrow though?

OK, this video demonstrating the wide array of tones you can get from a Brian May guitar has sold me ...

Thanks again for all the help.

I use to have one exactly like that. I put fender custom shop 69 pick ups in it  a friend of mine has it now. It is a greatsounding guitar.

Well, I'll tell you what. I have a very near-new Mexican Strat body bought in '07 or '08, black, in virtually new condition. I can include the bridge, tremolo springs, and jackplate. To make your life easier. The only thing not stock are the saddles, someone else wanted them in a trade (these work just as well but don't say "Fender."

Tonar8353 from these forums has done/is doing a bunch of nitro-finishing jobs for me to include 4 different necks and counting. One of those nice finished necks is sitting on a Mexican Strat body - and I'm thinking I'd like to replace it with a nitro-finished body so the entire guitar can wear naturally and not just the neck. It's already copper shielded.

SOOOO, in you're interested let me know, I'd be looking for ~$120 shipped in the US. Guitar is assembled at the moment but I could get your some close up pictures. I have an extra set of compatible locking tuners I could hook you up with cheap while we're at it also. Let me know.
