Hi, I'm looking to build a guitar and I was wondering;

If I go for a Pau Ferro neck will I need a top to it? eg; Ebony etc...

If I use a heavy Rosewood strat body, will this be enough to not make the guitar neck heavy if using Pau Ferro?

Will Warmoth be able to make the control scheme on a strat body like the one on the Ibanez PGM 301? I've emailed them and they haven't been clear on this

Thanks for your help guys. Hope to hear from you!

Mike

Pau Ferro can be neck and board...

Depends. If it's solid, you could probably attach a V8 engine to the peghead, and it wouldn't be neck-heavy. Rosewood is like dark matter.

I don't have a clue, but welcome to the board!

I think 1cubic in. of rosewood is = to like 1 metric ton...... :dontknow:

And welcome...... :icon_biggrin:

Don't pay any attention to these mooks; they're all girly men for which an extra couple of pounds is an enormous strain.

I have a lot of exotic necks, the only one very noticably heavier than normal is a Pau Ferro/Ebony. I have it on a Quilt Maple/Korina body that weighed 4 lbs 11 oz. and it balances fine. Regardless of whether you use rosewood or some other body wood, as long as the body weighs more than about 4 1/2 lbs. you shouldn't have an issue with it being neck heavy. That covers most all the rosewood bodies of any type in the Showcase.

As to the Ibanez PGM 301 - god that is an spectacularly ugly guitar; the closest you get from Warmoth is the normal 5-way switch position and the controls X-X-T and put the single volume where the 2nd tone control would regularly go. If you want the volume further down, just order X-X-X for controls and drill the vol pot hole where you want it, it's no big whup

Meh, I got a bass I made in highschool that would make you whimmper like a liitle 2yr old girl after about 5 min's.....Solid oak..... :laughing7:

Oak is for Bar-B-Q. And you call yourself a Texan. Sheesh.

:icon_biggrin:

Yeah the common wisdom is that oak sounds like sh*t.  Of course, the Red Special is oak, but Brian May would probably sound fantastic on a cigar box guitar.

No Mr. I'm not really a Texan, Mesquite is for BBQ, oak is for making furniture......and really heavy bass guitars....

Not for a bass it doesn't. Sounds pretty good, maybe the high dollar Krylon special paint job..... :laughing11:

And the piece of timber that Brian May's Red Special is made out of was a 500 yr old mantle piece.. Very well cured I'd say...... :icon_biggrin:

But you are correct, he could play a pair of tennis shoe strings and it'd be a hit......

Sorry, I can't remember, did I ask for your opinion?

Thanks for all the help guys, can't wait to get cracking with my build.

If you post here you're going to get some, roll with it...

Get some Sugar Maple or Cherry wood to bring out the nuances in the smokiness.  I saw that Warmoth has some Mango for a lam top.  I would normally try a different set of pickups, but there is no harm in trying some different types of wood to see what happens.
