This summer I started to work on a swamp ash strat body with a truly fantastic grain pattern. that I planned to finish in a translucent Sonic Blue, with Reranch nitro. This was my first time trying to get a level finish from swamp ash, and discovered that 3 grain fills were apparently not enough. I nailed the color and translucency I wanted, but after the 3rd clear coat the finish sunk into the grain. I decided to start over, and got as far as grainfilling and sealer coats when I ran out of time. Now that it is raining all the time here in Portland, I doubt I'll be able to attempt a decent nitro finish until next summer. Time for a plan B.
Can anyone suggest a way to pull off a translucent sonic blue that could live under Tru-oil? Or under Minwax poly? At this point, I just want the thing finished, and have lost all interest in nitro. What would I use for a color coat?
