In my opinion, the Ibanez SR series has the best price / quality ratio in that price segment. The SR300 is actually a very nice bass and costs less than 500. If you don't like it, I'd check Yamaha and Squier as alternative brands.

A warmoth build won't be possible with this budget.

You need to go to a store and play basses.  As many as you can .  Understand that it takes time to know what you like.  Good luck.

Exactly this. What I like won't necessarily be what you like. Or what anyone else would like.
