Hey Guys, do you think a  pair of HD Z-90 will  be a good choise for my hollowed alder Tele? Anyone have experiences with these PUs?

nope, first time i've heard of them and I bet that might be the case with some of the other guys.

Anyone remember this?  "This is a Warmoth thinline Tele with Harmonic Design Z90 pickups and a solid rosewood neck"

I'd have to say it depends on your style.  RPGuitar comes to these forums occasionally.

Yes I rember that vid. for me the high frquencies could be a bit more cutting through and pronounced but that is also a question of the amp setting....

I have the Harmonic Designs Z90 bridge pickup in a guitar I built , also a Gibson P-94  both Humbucker sized P-90 style.  The HD  bridge is 30% overwound and is therefore considerably higher output.  A very good lead pickup for hot blues .

The Gibson is much cleaner , depends on what your after.

I've also been very happy with mine. Power, mass, cut, and "the air" of a single coil. I might have to put it back into my Warmoth strat. It does buzz a bit though, at least with the amount of distortion and volume I usually play with. I have tried to adjust it closer to the strings (well back and forth over the time really) as per the instructions by Harmonic Design, but the buzz didn't change all that much. But, I had a humbucker in the same guitar and it buzzed a bit as well. Maybe I should check my soldering.

Hey,

I'm quite interested in the Z-90 pups. Does anyone have any audio of this pup in action besides the video posted above? If not, could you write your experience with them, if you have any?

Thanks!!

Bill Frisell is a Harmonic Design Z-90 user.

From  http://www.harmonicdesign.net/allpages/gibsons.html

" I had the Z-90 installed just days before I recorded 'Good Dog, Happy Man', and got sucked into its big, full sound.  I wound up using it on every song."

If you don't have any cuts from "Good Dog, Happy Man," send me a private message and I can help you out with one or two so you can hear what's up.  Obviously I'm not gonna violate Mr. Frisell's copyright beyond a little fair use for educational purposes.  I couldn't find any YouTube clips of him where you could see whether he was playing any guitar with the Z90 installed, in part because he has this charming habit of ignoring the audience and having the time of his life interacting with the other musicians on the stage instead.  Although this is a possible candidate:

I had forgotten about the Z-90 connection on that album, but now that I am reminded, I may just have to revisit whether to go with standard single coil form factor on my as-yet-un-finalized build plans....

Hey,

I did not know Bill used those pickups on Good Dog....I am a huge fan of bill frisell. I will certainly listen more closely to that album again. Thanks for the info! Although, I have ordered a pair of the Z-90's just a few days ago.....I should get them in a few weeks.

BF plays often here in nyc. He seems to always have his usual set-up (in the past few years at least)....

- Some tele, with standard looking bridge and neck pups. I swear he must own 100 different telecasters....
- Anderson Amplfier (1x12)
- Tube screamer, line 6 DL4, and other scattered boxes....(zvex ring mod, eh micro pog, more loopers, lexicon rack unit, etc)

Thanks again!
