Polished some of my older guitars recently and the quilts and flames just popped out with amazing 3-D depth. Then I checked some of the premium boutique guitars brought in for servicing and repairs and the Maple faces are quite one-dimensional as if they were "photo-finished" like cheaper guitars where quilt patterns were printed on wood veneer. Even when I rotate them in bright natural light, the ripples don't move or show any depth. Some Warmoths are like that as well except their Flame Maple necks where the "Tiger Stripes" really show up and comes alive in good light.
