I was looking at getting a gibbo 57 classic pickp for an Epi sg project I've got, but the pickup costs more than what I paid for the guitar!

I saw that Stewmac is making their version of an old PAF called the "Parsons street humbucker" anyone try em?

it says they're unpotted, would they squeal badly with gain for hard-rock? (I've never used unpotted humbuckers, I've only read that some guys love em since vintage ones were done like that, other guys bash em)

Sometimes they do, other times not. Potting them is a necessary insurance since it happens often enough that you don't want to chance it, especially if you're going to be in high sound level situations.

Gotcha, that makes sense

Potting is supposed to keep the iron containing parts of the pickups from vibrating.  I am sure that there are other important reasons, but those pieces of the pickups moving will be detected as noise.

Never tried them, but I do live in Kalamazoo not far from the Parsons Street factory....does that count???
