Gibson Moderne

How about adding a Moderne to round out the Explorer and Flying V for a "late 1950's space-age freakazoid guitar shapes" trifecta?  I've always loved the shape of the Moderne (the headstock, not so much) and actual Modernes (from the 1980s -- Gibson apparently never manufactured any in the late 1950s) are very difficult to find without a monumental price tag.  Is this a shape Warmoth has tried before?

You'd have to ask how much demand W would have to produce that shape. Maybe the reason those 80's Modernes are so expensive is that so few were sold, i.e. not many wanted them in the 1st place.

agreed...when i think Moderne...i think...well ill just keep it to myself. :sad1:
Sorry man. Not a fan.

Yea, ya either love em' or hate em'...
This has been discussed on the board in the past.  I personally love em'.

There used to be a guy on flea bay that worked for Gibson back when they made the Moderne.
He was making some custom copies that looked really great.  Seems like they went for ~$2500.
I have not seen him on there for quite some time.

Warmoth might make a custom for you if you have a true to scale blueprint :icon_scratch:

hurts when I look at it...especially the headstock..to each his own...may look cool with a V headstock...I am sure W would make on if you had the dimentions.

Yea, I agree about the headstock.  When the prototypes were made, there were three different headstock used.
One of them was the V headstock and I agree, I like it best...
:rock-on:

Seems we're all agreed on the headstock (the V would probably look much cooler).  Ah well, to each his or her own!  For whatever reason I've just always liked this one.  Maybe a custom build some day...

I know for a fact that Warmoth made at least one.  100% custom job though.

OMG, the slab of flame wood that body was cut from!!!!  :o

I would own that Moderne in a heart beat.  :icon_thumright:

I like them, but I wonder how much of this shape's appeal comes from its mystique and rarity; would I still want one if they were easy to get?

Similarly, I suspect that my dislike of Strats and Les Pauls comes from their ubiquity; I can't deny that they're classic designs, but when I see walls and walls of them at every guitar shop, I just think they're boring.

I'd suggest there'd be little demand for that shape and best left to be made as a custom shape when someone specifically requests it.

And how much is genuine art deco furniture these days? A Moderne would look right at home, leaning up against an art deco couch, for sure. A genuine Gibson Moderne is very rare - I'm talking about the original 50's model not the 80s reissue - & would be worth, in good condition, a lot of money if found. But you are right, they are butt ugly.

Isn't the "original" (50's) Moderne just a myth? As far as I always understood, it was never produced, with the possible exception of a prototype. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Never a catalog item.  How many were actually built... unknown.  Think of it not as a prototype, but as a "concept" instrument.  A prototype would be more for setting up production.  It never got that far.

Quoted from the book "Moderne - Holy Grail of Vintage Guitars" by Ronald Lynn Wood
ISBN: 978-1-57424-241-6

" It was originally believed that 12 to 20 Modernes were produced, but a more realistic interpretation of the records would indicate only a few, probably four, were ever crafted.  The prototypes were built for introduction at the 1958 NAMM trade show in New York CIty along with the Flying V and the Explorer."

However, it later states, "Gibson's own shipping records show that 19 Modernes were shipped in 1958 and 3 were shipped in 1959.  This doesn't account for all the 1957 and earlier prototypes and the working models that had already been developed.

I guess this is why everything is so confusing regarding this rare geetar.

I would think that after all this time, if even a handful were made, we'd have seen one by now.

You mean an original?  There's a very few out there.  I think Billy Gibbons has one of them
