I think the whole thing is quite a shame for historical reasons, Gibson made 1/2 or more of the most iconic guitar designs out there period. If Gibson made a Les Paul Standard or 335 at comparable quality and price to a Fender American Deluxe (for instance), which we know is entirely possible (you can make a warmoth LP carved top for 1300 easy if you avoid exotic stuff), they would never ever be hurting financially. Their brand and designs have huge marketing power and I'm not the only one who loves the old designs. To squander the brand, goodwill, and history is just such a shame.
Actually, if PRS bought them I'd have some hope - they can at least make nice playing and sounding guitars and know how to make money and expand in the guitar business.
