Anyone have an opinion or experience with the Gibson burstbucker 3 pickups?
It seems like the logical choice for LP tones out of a strat......bridge position.

Of all the Burstbuckers, its the darkest toned.  I've got one here:

I've also got one teamed up with a Burstbucker Pro #1 on the brown ES-333 I've got.

No issues at al - a tasty pickup, not overly bright.  If you think you want something brighter - the Burstbucker #1 might actually be a better choice.  Its lighter wound (low mid  7k vs about 9k).

Thanks for that info CB, That is a big help and a very important detail for sure. I naturally went with the most hot rodded version, as on paper going 90 sounds better from a rock and roll point of view, but I do think that would be too dark for my taste...... so much appreciated. :)

i loved the burstbucker 3 i had in my BFG not too long ago. definitely a very even humbucker, as CD said. it seemed to do everything well, and everything it DIDN'T do the p90 in the neck would. but it really seemed to do everything from a metal crunch to an even clean sound pretty well. easily the best stock pickup i've ever had in a guitar i've owned.

I would actually like to go with the Burstbucker Pro, but it dosn't come in the plain black bobbin style and I don't really want to put a covered pickup on my strat. But it seeems like the best of the best. Though I will definantly be going with the Burstbucker 1 or 2 now as I do think the 3 would be too dark for what Im looking for.

Yeah I always have a hard time deciding between an LP or Strat, But I have always been a strat player so I can only think it will be the only guitar I truley feel comfortable with, So being that I almost never use the bridge pickup in a Vintage Strat pickup configuration, I figured why not put the Burstbucker in there to quench my love of heavy Rock and an Occasional Metal jam, Im thinking couple that with a Warmoth Chambered Mahogany/Flame maple top body and put Fender Texas Specials in the neck and middle positions and walla, the Strat of all Strats.....good for Blues, Rock, and Metal.  Yay!!!!! :headbang:

Thanks CB, oddly that never occured to me, would that be difficult or risky? I ask because I've never taken off the cover on a pickup like that. I know the Pro model is waxed so Im wondering wether they would come apart easily without damaging the wire?  :icon_scratch:

Find an old fubar'd floppy disk and take the "cover" off it.  Those are aluminum.  Straighten it out.  Heat up the joint on the factory cover and slide that aluminum piece between the cover and base of the pickup.  Get it in there about 3/8 inch or so.  Let it cool.  Aluminum wont let solder stick, so slide it out and to the other side.  While the pickup is still warm, work the factory cover off.  You might get some wax that "glues" the cover to the coils..... but keeping it warm will let you take it right off.  Clean up the excess wax with naphtha.  Naphtha eats wax right up, and lets you wipe it.  The wax will re-solidify as the naphtha evaporates off.

Thats about it really.  Cover off are easier than covers goin back on, where the side need to be clamped/pressed, as well as the base to cover, to make sure it doesn't go microphonic.

BTW, you MIGHT want to wrap the coils with some black coil tape (black masking tape is all that is)... sometimes the coils are double wrapped, sometimes not.  I like double wrap better for a bit of protection.  Double wrap is each coil wrapped by itself (they all have that) then both together makes it a double wrap.

Thanks alot CB, I don't think I'll worry about putting the cover back on, but I appreciate the detailed info on getting it off.
I really like the BBPro as it seems to be the be all end all for what Im looking for, as its wound to be close to the BB 1 and 2 so I believe it will give me just what Im looking for.
I think I will do the double wrap as well, it makes alot of sense to protect it.
Thanks again. :icon_thumright:

The BBPro1 is about the same "loudness" as a BB2, and the BBPro2 is about the same loudness as a BB3 - very similar windings.

Excellent info, then the BBpro 1 is the pickup I will go with. I know it will be quite a contrast to the Fender Texas specials in the neck and middle, but its of no consequense really as they are for different purposes but its just as you mentioned the BB 1 seems to be what Im looking for.
Its kinda funny how easy it is to think that the hotter a pickup is wound the better the sound, but in all reality it dosn't really translate that way at all, especially when you start bringing in outside factors like wood type and clarity.
I do like the dark sound of Gibsons, but I think you pegged my thoughts and tone Ideas perfectly when you suggested I may want something a bit brighter,  It makes more sense being that Im pairing it with the Fender pickups and that its going into a strat body as well. Not to mention Im traditionaly a strat guy.
Thanks CB, as usuall your a fountain of usefull information, and its greatly appreciated. :)

Nope, those are polepieces and aren't attached to the cover.  Feel free to adjust/radius them to tweak your tone though.
