I was lounging by the pool this weekend and listening to some oldies whilst having cocktails, and thought about this.  Tough call, but I'll start with five of my favs

Neil Young
Tom Waits
Elton John/Bernie Taupin
The Stones
Paul Simon

Bob Dylan
Tom Waits
Bill Mallonee (Vigilantes Of Love)
Mark Heard (Bruce Cockburn's favorite songwriter)

and a 3-way tie between: John Cale, Joni Mitchell, and Sam Phillips...

Mike Ness :headbang1:

Mike Ness then? Or Mike Ness now?

I found the last couple of Social D albums a bit lackluster, but "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" and the others from that era are all classics in my book.

Kris Kristofferson
Harry Chapin
Carol King
John Lennon
Leonard Cohen

Due to lack of time & space, I won't be able to get past the 70's

:rock-on:

Dang, forgot about Joni...

To clarify, Tom Waits is my number one.  They weren't in any kind of order.  Nighthawks at the Diner was my entry point into the works of Tom.

I could go on and on, but I'm quite sure the reason I listen to such a high percentage of instrumental music is because of Bob Dylan, the CSN&Y juggernaut, the Garcia/Hunter branch... it's hard to even find a song form (or lack) that hasn't been pounded to the utmost degree.

I mean, pick up your pencils, kids! Write about... how cool it is to be in your car, rolling down the road with your baby by your side - or else maybe she's NOT, because she's evil. WAAAH!

I like story songs too, a dead horse for sure.

Love me some Tom Waits. To me, Rain Dogs is one of the best albums ever recorded.

One of the greatest opening lines to a song ever, "Well, it's 9th and Hennepin, and all the donuts have names that sound like prostitutes."

Okay, I live in Minneapolis, so I just might be a little biased, but still great line!

My fave songwriters?
Roddy Frame (Aztec Camera)
Brian Wilson
Lennon/McCartney
Joni Mitchell
Paul Simon

but there are so many! Goffin/King, Holland/Dozier/Holland, Isaac Hayes, David Crosby ...

Lol.  I might have to request favorite Tom Waits lyrics....

Mine is "Never trust a man in a blue trench coat, never drive a car when you're dead."

Just a few names, since I kinda like a lot of songwriters:

Lucinda Williams
Bob Dylan
Townes Van Zandt
Andy Partridge
James Taylor

I've been thinking this over for a while. Here goes:

Tom Waits
Mike Ness
Joey Ramone
Tom Petty
Tomas Kalnoky (Streetlight Manifesto)
Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio)

I know it said five, but I couldn't decide between the last two.  :icon_biggrin:
