First Time Builds

[P-Ray-J]

I’m excited, ordered my first bass build in January and just did another order too. Both are P Bass bodies, but one with Jazz pups (and a route for P neck pup just in case) and the other with Music Man HH pups.

So - what to expect? I’m wondering what your experience is with frets and nuts. Or anything else you’d like to share?

Oh, and if you have a similar Warmoth bass, what’s the weight?

So, the builds….
1) The P-J has a slim taper quatersawn jazz neck, dark RW board, vintage nitro, alder body, Sherwood Green, jazz pups in standard position.

2) The P-MM has 41mm P neck, roasted maple neck and FB, clear nitro, roasted ash body in satin (natural), 2 x MM pups in Sabre position (bridge pup further

From Warmoth themselves frets are playable but could always use some refinement: https://warmoth.com/blog/warmoth-fret-installation

The same goes for the nuts. I would certainly plan to either refine both as part of initial setup or pay a tech/luthier to do it. I also really just don’t like how bright white the corian nuts are, I like a polished bone or vinyl nut.

For my SSB the geometry was perfect - no shim needed. Fret ends were slightly proud and needed filing for a perfectly smooth feeling. I also rounded the fretboard edges over at the same time.

Weight is a crapshoot! You can pay Warmoth a fee to use the lightest blank in current inventory.
