Fingerboard Wood

When customizing fingerboard wood you can choose between Indian Rosewood and Indian Rosewood (Dark). What is the difference?

Also, just to clarify, the shaft wood would be the back of the neck and nothing else?

I'd figure the dark would be darker. Usually when getting a custom option you can choose the actual piece. For the backwood it also shows on the headstock... so it doesn't match the finger board  although at times they are pretty close. I was stoked on my canary on canary.

Note that if the back wood showing on the headstock is a less than thrilling proposition, you can get veneers put on for $45. For instance, if you have a curly Maple top on the body, you can have a curly Maple veneer put on the headstock, which allows you to use whatever wood you want for the neck meat and it'll all match up nicely. If you order the neck and body at the same time and have them finish them, they can even match that up.

The difference is that one is dark and one isn't. Wood varies in color, and you can pay for the lightness or darkness you want.

That makes sense, but I'd still call and ask. Best to get the info straight from the horse's mouth.

I have an all Rosewood neck here where the fretboard wood is dramatically different than the neck meat. The people who've seen it think the fretboard is Brazilian, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to say. I can't imagine Warmoth shipping something like Brazilian in place of Indian, but who knows? Maybe they screwed up.

In any event, Rosewood is sort of a generic term, and its presentation/quality varies widely. Even WalMart guitars will have Rosewood fretboards, but they're nothing like what you'd get from a premium supplier like Warmoth/PRS/etc.

Here's an example of what Warmoth call dark rosewood. I didn't want anything too busy as I thought there'd be enough going on with the blocks but I also didn't want go as dark as ebony. Very pleased with it.

Just have a look at what the showcase offers: http://www.warmoth.com/Pages/ClassicShowcase.aspx?Body=1&Shape=1&Path=Strat

In the left column, choose either "Indian Rosewood" or "Indian Rosewood (dark) under "fingerboard wood". That should give you a pretty good idea of what each kind can look like, and what kind of color variation you can expect.
