Finding Forgotten Gems

Don't you just love opening a bag or a box that has been sitting for a long time and find something that you forgot you had? I have this Peavey gig bag up in the man cave that I usually just toss stuff into to keep it out of the way. You know, stuff I'll get to later. Anyway, I went looking for the electrical tape today....did you really think the VH Frankenstein wasn't going to get my signature black tape over the open hole on the scratch plate? Anyway, I pull the bag out to see if I had thrown the tape in there and to my surprise I found the following items

1. DiMarzio Super Distortion full size humbucker in white.
2. Seymour Duncan Burst Bucker in black
3. Van Zandt Blues series bridge position single coil

Now I need to either build an HSH with multi colored pups or there are 3 guitars that need to be built around them.

I've actually had the experience of opening a guitar case and thinking "Hey - I forgot I had this guitar!"  :)

Me too ......  :toothy11:

If I went searching in that big box in the corner, I'd probably pull out enough stuff for 3 or 4 complete builds.

My problem is I CAN'T forget that I have stuff! Mind goes crazy inventing ways that spare componet can become part of something whole, or be the reason for another new creation. Example;  budget '51 P-bass got to be what it is simply because I had a Gotoh 201 in the spare-parts box. -That box has to get emptied, parts have to get returned, sold or otherwise disposed of so I don't build an entire guitar around something as trivial as a pickguard. (This, I shamefully admit, has actually happened, too.)

If I felt compelled to build instruments around the items in the Drawer of Misfit Parts, I'd need to win the lottery or something. As it is, I let them have their own lives, being the generous and compassionate yet cantankerous overseer that I am.

This.

I've got 2 builds fully planned out based on a handful of parts in the spare parts section: a 5 string P-bass (based on 5 inline tunes & a Badass V style bridge) and a cigar box-ish tenor guitar (based on a few swamp ash planks, a set of tuners [of which only 4 work], and a bit of sheet metal).  :toothy12:

I've also got a single .136 low B nylon tapewound string that's inspired a number of ideas, from a washtub bass to a 3 string hyperbass with 3 hipshot detuners & single string bridges.

I have to use ALL of them. . .
