Finally decided on my bass build, and need advice

Hey everyone!

So, after a lot of mulling over, I finally know what I want to build ... a Deluxe 5 jazz double-bucker bass.

I am going to use 2 Music-man style pickups, and was wondering if the "sweet spot" rout will allow another MM pickup in either the bridge or neck position.  The idea is to have more of the Warwick style $$ bass rather than the Ernie Ball style.

Also, I want to wire the pickups to individual coil split switches for the most tonal diversity, and was wondering if anyone knew which wire belonged to which coil ... I already know that the black is closest to the bridge, and the red the closest to the neck, which leaves the white and green as the 2 question marks.

Better yet if anyone has the actual schematic!!!

Thanks in advance!

Here is a standard VVT setup plus series/parallel switches.
You could use on/on/on switches for series/north coil/parallel switching as well, or swap the north and south coil leads for the south coil to be active in single coil mode.

I doubt it if he's going to put two blade switches on a bass.

Mini toggles or push/pulls are a lot more convenient.

I figured all switches were the same.

Nope.
There is a difference in both the switching and the physical layout of the terminals.
For example, standard 3 way pickup selection: (Ignore the pots)

Just got back in ....

Thanks for the schematics so far .... and yes, I am going to use 2 mini switches for the coil split, the outputs of which are going to go to a blend pot.

Everything is going to be Duncan .... pickups, preamp, etc.

However, in order for this to be what I would like, I still need to know if I can get the 2 MM pickups in the positions I want ... preferably the "sweetspot" and bridge positions, if they fit.

Thanx again!

I doubt that a MM pickup in the "sweet spot" is going to leave enough room for another pickup of the same size on either side.  But if you measure things carefully, you could probably put two MM pickups close together (with a small gap between them) such that the center of the gap is right over the center of the "sweet spot".  This could give you a "virtual pickup" configuration where you use switches to select the adjacent coils of both pickups.  Then you could effectively have a 3-pickup bass.  :)

You should figure out where you want your pickups to be placed based on the sweet spot position and ask Wyliee if he'd be willing to work out a custom order for you.  I've had nothing but positive experiences by working with him.  It'll cost a bit extra, but it is worth it.

With this having more of a Music Man mantra to the electronics, are you planning on going passive or active with the pickups?  You may wanna also take a look at Seymour Duncan's Passive Phase II soapbars. Think of it as a Jazz Bass humbucker--a pal of mine has an American Jazz Bass V that he had one of these put in to replace the bridge pickup. He loved it from the start, but really loved it when he put some push/pull pots to do series/parallel and to cut one of the coils. He's now seriously thinking of putting one in the other spot as well. It may be an idea if you decide that you would want passive over active.
