Im considering building a Strat out of Mahogany as Im thinking of putting a Gibson Burst bucker in the bridge position for rock and heavy jamming but I want to keep the authentic Fender sound and tones in the neck and middle positions intact. Im going with Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Strat Pickups in the neck and middle positions.

My question is: if anyone has heard Fender single coils in a Mahogany body and if so did you think it changed the tone dramatically as in muddied it up or took away from it from a strat tone perspective?
I know traditionaly Mahogany tends to be darker thus the Gibson sound, I thought maybe having it be a chambered mahogany strat as now Gibson chambers most of their bodies and it apparently improves tone considerably.   Any opinions???  Thanks
The neck would be an all maple vintage modern.

lol!!!  ...traveling,growing.....living and loving the blues...lol, hey whats up man.....I love this place, its still radical guitar talk..lol  I was just going through some of the heated discusions and I couldn't help but laugh...mostly at myself for how heated I used to get....lol, but nice to see there are alot of guys keeping it real...lol :icon_thumright:

One of my favorite Strats is this one with matched Indian Rosewood top and fretboard on mahogany body/neck:

It's got a set of Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's in it and sounds great, kind of like a vintage "bell tone", but warmer, although I think the mahogany neck plays a greater role in that than the body.

Thanks Jack, I know you use alot of Fender pickups and have built a heck of alot of guitars here....What are your thoughts on going with Rio's??

I may change it to Humbuckers as I really liked the Rio Grandes in my last guitar....

I also found out that wenge is pretty heavy especially since Im going with a fatback, so I may have to go Solid Mahogany on my strat to keep it balanced, so Im thinking it will color the tone even more and that is kinda why Im rethinking things and thinking about going back to Rio's...

Which Rio Grande SC Strat set do you mean? I've got a Vintage Tallboy/HalfBreed in the neck/middle position and a split JBJr in bridge on one build and just upgraded one of the kid's MIM Strat to a Dual Calibrated set (Vintage Tallboy/HalfBreed/MuyGrande).

They're a good set for Strats, and noticiably hotter than the FCS SRV/Texas Specials. I'd probably use another set if I did another Strat SC build, but have enough of those already. My only caveat would be that if you wire them up stock, due to the overwind/"hotness" it's hard to maintain a clean vintage sound if you go past about 8 on the volume control. Not saying that's a bad thing, just different.
