Fender 70's F Tuners

I can tell you that vintage is not correct. I had to drill out the vintage holes to fit the F logo tuners. Getting out a ruler and squinting some (I should get some calipers) I'd go with the Sperzel size (25/64).

Fender has made at least... at least... three different patterns of F style tuners for guitars over the  years.  The current ones DO NOT fit the 70's models, unless you redrill and such.

I was talking about the new '70s style (part number 099-0822-100)  - I guess they are made by Schaller.

I am in the middle of a Jimi "Woodstock" strat build and these were the same style tuners on the 68 strat- I just want to order the neck with the right size hole.

Speaking of Schaller... I just bought a set of locking "F" tuners for my Sienna Sunburst strat... the tuners were BRAND NEW... guess what?  Made in Tawain!!!  When did that happen?  I thought the Fender USA and MIM tuners were made in Germany by Schaller???

Fender in the 70s had their f-tuners made by Schaller.  They still make them but without the embossed f at the back.  The key hole bore size is 9.8mm or 13/32" which is the same size as their M6 mini tuners.  These are high quality tuners with solid mounting screws unlike the ones supplied by Gotoh Klusons.

You can check them at  http://guitar-machine-heads.com/hp135058/Machine-Heads-ST6.htm

The Schaller rep personally calls me every time I order Schaller tuners, just to ask what size drill I'll be using so he can include the correct screws to fit my drill bit.....<ahem>

IIRC those new locking F tuners are actually Ping.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Mike.

The tuners I'm referring to are:

Fender and Ping get along famously.  Fender does not use the Gotoh Kluson copy any longer, its all Ping.

Ping, actually makes a decent tuner.  Very smooth.  Gibson has been using them for a while now.  Ovation does.  I've got them on three Gibby's here.  The one ES-333 has Ping, the other has Grover.  Without removing them, I challenge anyone to tell the difference, in any respect whatsoever - except one says Gibson Deluxe the other Grover Deluxe.  You take off the Gibson ones and they're marked PW under the casting, for "Ping Works".
