looking for some f/b on wenge necks,, mainly the back of the neck,, is it fast,,? no finish needed?..also.. anyone have a bloodwood fingerboard? or the combo? how does it compare to rosewood? I really prefer maple necks,, but i might consider somthing different..ordered a tele chambered body w/ alder back,, flame koa top..now looking for the right neck.

I really wanted a Wenge/Bloodwood neck a while back, but I sort of lost interest in Wenge.

This is the only example I can think of. There were Wenge/Bloodwood necks in the showcase a while back, however.

If you want Maple tonality, Wenge probably wouldn't be a good choice. Consider Canary or Padouk or something.

As far as Bloodwood fretboards versus Rosewood, if you can discern a difference at all, given the many other variables involved, Bloodwood should sound something like Ebony. It will feel similar, as well, though, in my experience, Ebony is just slightly smoother than Bloodwood at all stages of ultra-fine sanding.

yes i do luv maple,, the highs. r so lear and clean.. just saw a White Korina Finished Transparent Brown w/ rosewood board.. on the showcase looks very nice,,i know its warmer,, just kicking some thoughs around,,, still have 6 weeks before the body gets here...

It's really tough to beat an Ebony fretboard and I've never felt a better neck than raw Pau Ferro, but I don't know if the Pau Ferro would look good against the Alder. Probably be ok, since Alder is pretty featureless. With a flamed Koa top, you don't want to get too fancy with the fretboard lest the thing look too busy. With that kind of top, it's gotta be the focus. So, I'm back to the Ebony.

I have a flamed Koa headstock with a regular Koa neck on one of my guitars and had it finished in a gloss vintage tint. Ebony 'board. Gold frets. Pretty sexy stuff. Plays like a dream come true. But, then the Ebony over raw Pau Ferro neck is the next dream. Both good. Tough choice. Maple would be the best match, appearance-wise, and nobody ever got fired for choosing a maple neck.

I have three Wenge necks, wicked slick.  Two with Ebony and one with rosewood.  Wenge is not as bright and snappy as maple, but it still has a helluva presence and is very lively.  It is easy as pie to play on and very fast.  It is not like Pau Ferro, which is a satiny smooth lightning feel (like Ebony and Bloodwood).  It has a coarser texture, but it is the "holes" or grain that make it feel this way, and make it so that you can fly across it.

I dunno.  It is very hard to describe with words.  I am a big fan.  I have Wenge on one bass, a Les Paul, and a goofy guitar that I am currently building.  I love the stuff.  I also have two Pau Ferro necks, two ebony necks (like blood wood) and a Bocote (Mexican Rosewood) neck.  The Wenge is my favorite, but you have to understand, I think of it as splitting hairs.

I have a bloodwood board on my padouk strat neck.
It feels good, but to be honest I can't "feel" any difference between my bloodwood and ebony boards.

i have a strat that i played for many years.. the neck is birdseye and pau ferro board.... i luv that gtr.. the pau farro board is very fast and sweet to play on.. great sound.. bought the neck in 85' from tom anderson... he most likey got it from warmoth...that gtr is in need of work but will be done... this wenge sounds nice on the backside,, if its smooth and fast........maybe ebony on the board,,, would be the way to go...i will keep looking ........i have to admit,, boatneck flame maple,,,with nitro gloss... is up there......... :guitarplayer2:

Wenge smooth?  Eh, not that much.  Slick, very much so.  You can try it if you can find a shop that has Warwick basses.  They like it a lot.

No it's slow as molasses. Seems like it will never get here and it's killing me. UPS hasn't updated the tracking info in a week...    :icon_jokercolor:
