Fat Cat guitar (custom shape)

I was going to show this build after it was finished but it got delayed and I'm too impatient so I’ll post some pics and explain what I’ve done so far. This was always intended to be a baritone but I recently found out some neck options weren’t available on baritones so I decided to make this one a 24” scale neck so I could have the wood and inlays I wanted.

I wanted a totally custom shape using elements of my favorite guitars so this is sort of a hybrid of a Jazzmaster, Z body and Les Paul. Is the name Fat Cat taken yet, because that’s what I’ve been calling this body shape. Here's the basic mockup before I made a few changes.

Made from swamp ash Warmoth body blank with the bridge and pickup routs cut out for me. It was really easy to work with and all I had for power tools was a small jigsaw and rotary sander.

Instead of a flat arm contour, I tried to sand it almost like an arch top, back and front, so the contours are all the way around the body.  You can kind of see it by how the grain curves at the edges.

My  idea was to combine transparent stain with reflective glitter so I’d have the woodgrain and sparkle finish all in one. In the end the glitter is not that noticeable and it’s hard to work with, but it looks ok.

The stain is Stew Mac dye with denatured alcohol - red base coat, sanded back, then yellow worked in. I was going for a fire look, which you can see in the sunlight. A few thin coats of poly so the wood grain still shows through.

Awesome neckplate made by Doug that has some really fine details in it, I didn’t think were possible with a machine.

Chromed out, right down to the pickup covers, and yellow crystal knobs.

I don’t believe in grain filler. I love how the swamp ash looks at an angle with the grain showing. For now I’ve nicknamed her Habanero.

That’s as far as I got for now. Another pickup on backorder and I’ll be ordering the neck and other parts soon.

The neck will be mahogany fatback with Warmoth headstock and sharkfin inlay. Not sure about the fretboard yet – something dark and grainy. I’ll order an unfinished neck and maybe put a thin coat of something on it myself. Does mahogany feel good raw on the back of a neck?

All DiMarzios – I can’t remember which ones right now except for the D-Activator Neck. And that third control hole that isn’t filled will have the same style knob but will be a 5-way rotary switch.

I'm always ready to hate "new" guitar shapes like the petty jerk I really am, but that looks awesome! Love the body shape. That finish is great too!

Thanks - I consider this one the prototype, so once I've played it for a while I can make another one with any changes to the balance, control placement, etc. and get to experiment more with finishes.

Looks great, but I think a side jack would have complemented the body further.

I agree, but he's rounded the thing off quite a bit, so it might not have been a viable option. Not enough flat space left to play with. Even the football jackplates need at least an inch of height or they'll overhang any roundover, and won't look right with less than about an inch and a quarter. Electrosockets only need an inch, but they don't look right with less than about an inch and a half. Square plates are worse yet.

Yeah, maybe. Would've been a tricky drill, but doable.

In any event, I can see why he did the top jack. You have similar problems with SGs and Melody Makers.

I wasn't confident enough in my wordworking skills to do the side jack myself with basic handtools. Maybe next time after I get better tools. And the top jack is a little too high into the body, but I didn't notice it much until the hole was drilled.

I don't like top jacks with straight-ended cables, but I'll just get the angled end so it's not sticking out.

Darn you  :icon_biggrin:  ..... now you got me thinking that's something I may-be able to do  :dontknow:

Never thought of just getting a slab of Lumber routed ready like that.
I could really have some fun with that  :toothy10: ...... much easier for a GK-3 install too.

That last pic, looks great to me, nice affect.
I'd still go for a side jack thou ..... just me !!

You should try it - I think everyone here could make a custom body even if they have little to no wordworking skills like me.

That swamp ash body was only $150 and that includes your choice of pickup, bridge and control routs. My suggestion is to do the control placement yourself because it's so easy, and if it's a rear rout you have a lot of space to play with.

Also, if anyone is thinking about getting a blank, keep in mind they're made for the size of Strat-style guitars. You obviously can't make a Flying V or anything like that. I actually had to shorten my design a little bit because of that. You could always call Warmoth and see if larger ones are available but I didn't think of it at the time.

Cool thanks for that  :icon_thumright:
Yeah I'd drill my own control holes / input holes, since I'd be doing a GK-3 instal.
I really really never thought of doing that

Suppose it's just the standard thinkness too  :dontknow:
Don't worry I'll go play with the builder  :icon_biggrin:

I'm not usually one for one-offs either, but I think this is a really cool design. It looks like it could already exist--I don't know that makes any sense, but I mean it as a good thing.  :icon_thumright:

The only thing I might change (since this is, after all, a propotype) would be to angle the string-through holes the other way, i.e., with the bass side forward. I can't help but think that would fit better with the offset shape.

I like your design a lot, it *kinda* reminds me of the Ernie Ball Albert Lee... just a few similarities  :dontknow:

Anyway, the Fat Cat is still awesome, I love the Chrome pickups!  :headbang:

The closest thing I can compare it to for size and shape is Eddie Van Halen's signature guitar (which I think was intended as a cross visually between a Strat and a Les Paul). By the way, I really like the headstock on that Albert Lee.

I went through about 25 mockups to get to this shape but this picture here was the inspiration, to combine these styles:

And yes, the string-through holes should definitely slant down right to left on an offset guitar. It does look awkward the way it is now.

Cool  :toothy10:  ... wondered what happened to this build.

Well I took your word  :icon_thumright:
All-thou I got a Tele La Cabronita unfinished body and I'm doing some severe custom work too that.
A Slab might be after that  :dontknow:

Nice - can't wait to see them.

After I finish my current projects, I plan to do 3 at a time, 2 of which will be made from blank slabs.

Been thinking about it myself too. Been playing with the Z and Soloist curves trying to see if I can come up with a more palatable version of an offset longhorn. But the other thing is that you can spread the cost out in smaller chunks. How much was that? Oh that's just $40 in lumber (there's a nice hardwood store down the road that stocks exotics). How much was your pedicure?
