Exotic Acoustic Necks?

i wonder what a wenge acoustic would sound / look like... could be pretty damn cool

check this out http://www.acousticvibesmusic.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=73&products_id=582

can't quite tell, but it looks like the neck is still finished with something. almost too bad

The thing with acoustics is the principle of operation is totally different from a solid body, or even thinline electric.

In a solid body - the neck is the most resonant part, and effects the tone the most (besides the pickups).

In any acoustic guitar the top is the most resonant part - and that is the absolute king of tone on any acoustic.

The back and sides on an acoustic also shape tone, but not to the extent most folks think.  In fact, the materials used are almost a non issue.  Its the depth and shape that determine the projection of the instrument, and the added low end resonance.  To that point - martin once did up some guitars with very nice tops, who's back and sides were essentially cardboard.  They sounded great.

So the neck on your acoustic will be of a wood that is easy to work with, easy to finish, strong, and not too heavy.

Yeah my acoustic right now is one of the martin X series with the laminate back, sides, and neck, with a solid top. Great full sound, no different than it's more expensive counterparts. However the laminate neck has started to warp a bit even after my luthier pressed it, which is what puts me in the market for a new acoustic.

that's why i was asking about exotics. there has to be one that's easy to work with, naturally they wouldn't require finish, they're all strong... weight would be in issue though... I just think it'd be great to get the raw feel on my acoustic as well as my electric.

I played a high-end, i.e., very $$$, acoustic in a store a few years ago that had an all rosewood neck; don't remember which brand it was, but the store is a Taylor dealer.

Apparently you can get some choices for neck woods on a Taylor "Build to Order" acoustic, but the options aren't listed on the website nor is pricing, probably if you have to  ask you may not be able to afford it

Taylors have bolt-on necks... maybe W should start making acoustic necks  :guitarplayer2:

Wella.... if you got it new, its covered under warranty by Martin, no?

Having said that, the Ovation USA models are known for good necks, if you like roundbacks.  If its played acoustic, get a mid to deep bowl, shy from the shallow.  They're loud, great action, good amplified too.  The USA ones have good necks with counter set grain on mahogany, with maple/ebony inner lams.  The "far east" Ovations have had some problems, but are overall pretty good.  The USA ones have a great warranty - forever to the original owner.

Based on my Black Korina L5S build, could be pretty sweet

I don't know any manufacturers that are using exotic woods for necks. If you really want one I'd contact an independent luthier who can build you anything you need. Look up Charles Fox, Mike Doolin, Ervin Somogyi, or anyone who presents @ the Healdsburg festival and see what they can do for you. Cheers,
