...so "headroom" equals "treble" (?)...thus far...not an improvement IMHO. Even the 85 in the neck is far too treble enhanced.

I'll play w/my amp & pedal settings and give it a chance...but first impression...I'll be converting back to 9 Volts.  :dontknow:

I've got EMGs in a guitar and bass, and the 9v is just fine for me as well.  The EMG 85 is more or less marketed as a neck pickup with the 81 being preferred for bridge (i.e. ZW set), but many have found the opposite to be true.  The 81 in the neck and 85 in the bridge work great.  Because of the quick connect on the pickup, the swap can be done easily w/out de-soldering or even removing the control cavity cover.

Forgot to add, if you have a dual battery route or both batteries are in the control cavity, wire the two in parallel for 9v.  It'll last longer which is good especially if it's in the control cavity.

+1 on the parallel...I tried the 18 volt thing for a minute...Meh...
9 Volts in parallel is the way to go.

Oh, and +10,000 to the 81 neck 85 bridge. I did the flip in my Viper and have been really happy since then.

I ran an 81 & 85 in a mahogany guitar @ 18vdc and liked the "knock" it produced.

I did adjust my amp as well. 90% gain. 60% treble. No mids. 50% bass. No Presence.

strange settings...what kind of amp?

Rect Recording Pre (live outs) --> Carvin TS100 --> Earcandy Buzz Bomb.
