Can a nut on a strat neck be replaced with one of these without modification to the neck?  Do you just knock out the old nut, clean the slot and glue one in or is it more involved than that?  I've never used one and was just curious.  Do they make that much of a difference?

The ones Warmoth sells are the retrofit, where as you say, knock out the old one and replace with the earvana.  But I've heard alot of people say that they are crap.... :dontknow:

Yeps, that is what I understand too, there are some instructions on Earvana site https://www.earvana.com/support_install.html

Any idea why they say this?

many think its crap because the material is so soft. the string really cuts through the nut. but I like it though. its soft, intonation is better, and because its soft, its easy to work with, it sounds good, and strangely enough, it makes bending easier.

Aha. I put an Earvana in my last project and I don't as yet see anything wrong with it, but yes, the material does seem fairly soft and I can imagine if u have a trem or do a lot of bending or changing between different tunings this could be become a problem... At the moment my nut is slotted so that it is about as low as it can be, lets see how long it is before it is lower than it can be :laughing7:

I didn't like it that much. It killed the tone and sustain on my strat. I did like what it did for the intonation. When I put a Graphtech nut in it's place it was like my guitar was reborn or something. It was a big difference. I'd use one if it was made differently. I don't want to modify my guitar's neck for the OEM version though.

The consensus seems to be that if they could make the nuts out of something reasonable, like corian, they'd be awesome.  As it is, too soft.  I'm not going to try one until they offer a better material.

Is it made out of rubber or something...... :dontknow:

It seemed like typical cheap brittle plastic to me. When I removed it the part in the slot of the neck it broke into like 3 pieces. The top piece (it's two pieces screwed together) was very thin and made my high E string sound like a sitar.

I love mine. It's the black version, which I mention cause it seems to make a difference...  :dontknow: My guitar has better tone, sustain, and intonation that almost anything I've ever played.
