I just got my VIP back from the guitar shop.  This is the one with the camphor burl top that looked like a leopard print with the zebrawood neck.  I had put an 80's MegaDrive that I had lying around in the bridge.  It has a Sustainiac in the neck slot.

OMG!!!  :icon_thumright:

I knew I liked it, or I wouldn't have kept this pickup around, but it hasn't been installed in a guitar for almost 20 years.  I don't know if it is the pup alone, or the pup in combo with the chambered Korina, but this is one of the crunchiest pups on rhythm, and it just sings on solo passages.  I have it installed with the bar away from the bridge.

I know I'm setting myself up for a request for sound clips.  The only thing is that my playing sucks relative to what I've heard in other clips on this board.

Suffice to say, if you haven't checked out a MegaDrive, I strongly encourage you to do so....immediately!  Even though they are discontinued, they are still available special order.  :icon_thumright:

I thought you played in a metal band that played out a bunch, back in the day. If so, how bad could you really be?  :icon_scratch:

You are right, but after having NOT played for 3 years, then picking it up again, I lost a LOT of chops.  I didn't play at all for 3 of the 5 years I spent in residency.  Trying to reclaim what one once had is not easy.  Unfortunately, it is not like riding a bicycle.

And here I was hoping this was going to be a response by someone who had also tried a MegaDrive.

Can't say I've tried many Dimarzio's, including this one.

Who does it sound like?

Its got a pretty unique sound.  The only player I know who played them extensively was Tony McAlpine.  I'll have to try to find time to record some clips.  This might just be my new (old?) favorite pickup.

This guy?

I think that's him, but I don't think that guitar has a MegaDrive.

This one does...I had to watch for a while until I could see the bridge pup.  Tears of Sahara is also probably his best song.

I think I misread your statement.  Earlier today, while perusing the board, I happened to run across a statement you had made on another thread about not playing for a number of years (for far longer than I had not) and that you are now better than you've ever been.  I think that's great.    "Back in the day," to be honest, I hid behind a lot of effects and left hand technique; I never had really developed my picking technique.  Now I've dropped the effects and am working on my right hand.  Yeah, I can play, I guess, but not as well as I would like to.  Now, I'm trying to play honestly.  Forgive me if I sounded defensive.  I guess technically I play better than I did then, but now it doesn't sound as good.  Its frustrating at times.  It will get better.

Sound clips will come someday, as soon as I take the time to read the directions of this recorder I have.   :icon_thumright:

It's ok - - I just didn't think your playing could suck so much that sound clips to demo the pickup would be unlistenable - but what do I know?

Who plays as well as they would like to? I know I don't. I don't think I ever will.

I don't think they'd be "unlistenable," but they certainly are not going to impress.  When I think about posting clips, I think about playing well enough to impress.  Perhaps that is wrong.  You are also right in that I don't think anyone plays as well as they want to, but...

I do think that's a bit misguided. It's so very easy to hear when someone has recorded something to impress the listener with their playing rather than the sound of whatever is being tested. I never listen through to that kind of crap. You go Doc, you've get the audience expectations up on this pickup now!  :)
