So I'm here... I've done a few Shellac seal coats , Black grain fill on the Ash back . Behlen Vinyl sealer, Topped off with a light coat of Behlen stringed instrument lacquer to lock it all in . from here I just need to decide on what toner color . either Cherry red or Amber yellow , or both or none .

I love that top! My choice would be to leave as-is with no toner, but this is going to make a killer bass no matter what you decide.

I really like that top, too. And I agree it doesn't need any more help.

It's also interesting how you can often see faces of things in bookmatched tops, as exemplified by that last picture...

:icon_biggrin:  yeah I saw trons MCP in it the second I saw it  So one of the lads on a bass forum suggested i do the back with cherry and leave the top . I think I'm going to take him up on that suggestion .

+1!  Maybe a light cherry on the top, but it's really pretty as is.  Great job!

did a quick color test on a piece of Ash
We Have Stewmac Cherry , SM Vintage Amber , & Behlen's Starcast Amber

w/ flash

no flash

Looks more like Oak than Ash. And are you sure you've got the with/without flash shots labelled right? Seems like they should be the other way around.

In any event, the blend and coloring is nice. Smart move doing tests before you commit.

yup and it is Ash  :icon_jokercolor:  Now I'm thinking the Starcast Amber would be nice for the back and the Stewmac Amber for the top  hmm

I did a similar thing with my flame maple jazz bass. I mainly did it as I've never used dies before and I'm so glad I did!

The colours look great and has a nice gradual blend. I reckon the two amber bursts would look cool without the red.  Up to you obviously, just my two pence. (I'm British, haha)

Thanks man ! well today is the day and i still don't know  :icon_biggrin:

So here we are . Error i got overspray all over the top when I shot the back , whoops.. What is the fix for that ? Rubbing compound , scratchX or wetsand ? But here she is so far . I went as originally planned and did the Cherry back but over some Starcast and Stewmac Amber . I did something totally off the cuff and bursted the sides . what do you think ?

Beautiful work..! And as others have said: COOL with the busted sides, very original  :icon_thumright:

Is this a short scale bass? Or a regular 34"..? I had an G&L ASAT bass at one time, this is also a tele-body bass and in 34" scale. It had terrible neck dive, but for a short scale I think the tele body will work fine.

Thanks ! 34" assuming the website is correct .  :icon_biggrin: yeah they can dive , I am expecting it but I do have Gotoh resolites on the neck and they are featherweight . Maybe I can find a workaround . There are 3 that I know of . I can try a strapbutton at the neckplate . I can put in a long bolt like Tom Hamilton does on the upper horn of his G&L or get one of those Steinberger "hooks" like this

we'll see
