Custom L5S idea

Hey everybody,

My name is Jason and I am new to the forum. I have been lurking and reading around here for awhile and thought I would join.

I am thinking about my second warmoth build (first was a lefty Swamp Ash Tele with a Black/Brown/Yellow burst, straight maple neck (Tele head)) and I have a really cool idea, but though I am fairly decent with wood-working, I am no pro either. I have always wanted a hollow/semi-hollow guitar (and have been listening to a lot of Black Keys lately) and really dig 335's and guitars like that, but being lefty, I am quite limited.

My idea was to order an unfinished lefty L5S with routs for pickups (TV Jones rout for bridge and neck), bridge, and neck, but with no pot holes. I would cut the upper horn out to make it a double-cut, and then rout through the body (all the way), so it would have a solid center block and hollow(ish) wings. There was a company who did something similiar to this a few years ago that I remember seeing in a Guitar World ad that showed a cutaway/how it was constructed. If I could have found it, I would have posted the picture.

Anywho, my question is considering my tone-inspiration (335's and Dan Auerbach of Black Keys), I didn't know what wood to order the body. I keep reading that a lot of the 335's use maple, but I was also considering Korina. And since the body would have so much cut away by myself, weight would not be an issue.

The picture here is just myself messing around with two mirrored images in photoshop for reference (just the body shape, not the cut outs).

Any other suggestions would also be very welcome.

Seriously. I mean, I get that it wouldn't be the same as say, an Archtop or Semi-Hollow, but I kind of think it would be a serious contender. And with that hollow option? Whew.

Debating between a LPS body or a L5S body. With a doublecut L5S? No question at all, it would be ordered now.

My thoughts exactly. I never liked the L5S, but last nite I was online looking at it and just randomly put my thumb up over the upper horn and went "whoa! 335!".

it's a crude rendition  but I think this would be super kick@$$!!! I'd buy one for D@mn sure!!

Not sure of the whole hangup on double cut HBs.
My 2 fav HBs are a Godin Flat Five X and a Doozy TV Starplayer. Both of which are single cuts. Got rid of the double cut HBs easily for these.

If I didn;t have the Godin, I would be so into a L5, 24 3/4 conversion 24 fret neck, a couple TV jones pups, a recessed TOM and a string through body setup.
Oh that TOM is a LR Baggs piezo TOM.
That is basically my Godin.

yeah YOUR favorite HB's are what you listed, but everyone has their own tastes! :icon_thumright: I'm just sayin'...

This brings up a question, does anyone know why the lower horn sticks out further than the upper? Seems backwards to me  :dontknow:
