Hey everybody,
My name is Jason and I am new to the forum. I have been lurking and reading around here for awhile and thought I would join.
I am thinking about my second warmoth build (first was a lefty Swamp Ash Tele with a Black/Brown/Yellow burst, straight maple neck (Tele head)) and I have a really cool idea, but though I am fairly decent with wood-working, I am no pro either. I have always wanted a hollow/semi-hollow guitar (and have been listening to a lot of Black Keys lately) and really dig 335's and guitars like that, but being lefty, I am quite limited.
My idea was to order an unfinished lefty L5S with routs for pickups (TV Jones rout for bridge and neck), bridge, and neck, but with no pot holes. I would cut the upper horn out to make it a double-cut, and then rout through the body (all the way), so it would have a solid center block and hollow(ish) wings. There was a company who did something similiar to this a few years ago that I remember seeing in a Guitar World ad that showed a cutaway/how it was constructed. If I could have found it, I would have posted the picture.
Anywho, my question is considering my tone-inspiration (335's and Dan Auerbach of Black Keys), I didn't know what wood to order the body. I keep reading that a lot of the 335's use maple, but I was also considering Korina. And since the body would have so much cut away by myself, weight would not be an issue.
The picture here is just myself messing around with two mirrored images in photoshop for reference (just the body shape, not the cut outs).
Any other suggestions would also be very welcome.
J
