Mahogany needs a finish anyways. Find something else.

Yeah, that seems to be the problem with a lot of showcase necks. Ugly cream dots.

I don't think cream dots are ugly, any more than any of them are. It depends on the context. You wouldn't put them on a maple or ebony 'board, for instance, but on pau ferro they would look right. MOP or Abalone can be awfully gaudy if they're on the wrong 'board, too. Black can be outright wrong on ebony, but perfect on maple.

Yeah I agree...

why don't they do a "natural blonde" dot? like a maple dot? then it would be cream colored, but it wouldn't look like a cheap-a piece of plastic.  :laughing7:

I think there are problems with sanding the board, and wood dust getting in the maple grain.

Combined with the fact that raw Maple dots are going to look nasty in no time without a finish.

While those dots don't have the same "cheap plastic" vibe they normally have on necks, they still look bad to me.

I can't stand the clay dots on old Fender either. No matter how you slice it, it's just an unappealing look for an inlay dot.

i love both black and cream dots. you never know what you're getting otherwise. i don't like the varying colors and patterns in the inlays otherwise. i'm fine with varying woodgrains, but the dots get me for some reason :dontknow: go figure haha

Yeah, that's my problem with a lot of Abalone dots. They are inconsistently colored.
Some dots are bright and really pop out visually. Others blend in with the board and sort of disappear. Then you have dots that partially blend in with the board and partially stand out visually.

It's difficult enough to get stains and dyes to permeate maple grain that I don't think sawdust getting in there is an issue.
