hey folks,
is it generally thought that you coil tap a bridge humbucker to use the "north"coil as opposed to the coil up against the bridge.
thnx
jack

Which ever you prefer. Closer to the bridge is brighter, further away is warmer.

But, you also need to take into account how each bobbin is wound. Most pups are asymmetrical. Some coils work better than others for a tap.

also, make sure the humbucker you are using has 4 wires coming out of it (2 for each coil) as opposed to a humbucker that just has a hot and a ground...

warmer and louder. well assuming the coils are identical

Coil SPLIT, don't get me started on this rant again.

You can choose either coil depending on preference.

You know, an "accurate" term would be coil shunt (to ground), you're not splitting a coil are you.  :icon_biggrin:  :icon_tongue:

But then again, "I could care less" means the same as "I couldn't care less" and in Korea, "Have you eaten rice yet?" means "Hello". Words just mean what we all agree that they mean, it's not a logic puzzle. That's the linguists view.

irregardless means regardless, look it didn't even correct me on my spelling it has become an actual word meaning the same as it's antonym so it is not an antonym at all! weird! what next y'all and you'ins are words too, oh god they are. what about you's? it didn't complain about that either. when will it end?

Irregardless does not mean regardless; it doesn't mean anything. If you want to split hairs, it theoretically means "not regardless."

absolutely right but in common usage it replaces regardless and that was my point. people who use words incorrectly to the point that it becomes a part of the language.

when i went to grade school i wasn't allowed to use a double negative much less conjugate two negatives into the same word.

i admit i am a bad speller. i never cared enough to memorize spelling but how can you expect people to understand each other when they say the exact opposite of what they mean?

sorry to hijack the thread but i thought that tfarny made a good point on the use of words

I don't like the word "inflammable."

i take that word as a personal challenge.

seriously though when did this board get to be so knit picky, it was a thread about a simple question over the merits of coil tapping a particular side of a bridge humbucker... Who cares about semantics we all knew what he was getting at, leave the pet peeves and chips on your shoulders at the door.

In regards to the original question, I say try it both ways and see which you like better, thats the only way to know for sure!

Btw, how about those semicolons?  :laughing7:

What about the semicolons?  :icon_scratch:

And Dan, I understand your point and didn't mean to sound snarky. I totally aree with you, but "irregardless" is one of my pet peeves. My ex used to say it about every third sentence or so and it drove me crazy, until one day I finally told her it wasn't a word. Then she started using it to mean "not regardless," and frankly that was at least equally annying.

Now what was this thread about again?  :laughing7:

It's not any inaccuracies in the term that bother me, it's that "coil tap" refers to an entirely different thing altogether.

Coil splitting is switching between series, parallel or single coil modes where two coils are involved, but coil tapping is switching from a full coil to the tapped portion of a coil if it was wound with a tap.

And of course a "tremolo" doesn't produce tremolo (but vibrato channels do), and "inverting phase" inverts polarity not phase, and nickle silver doesn't contain any silver, and...
