Getting knobs to fit properly is not always as easy as it looks. There's imperial and metric sizing, coarse and fine splined shafts, and press-on vs. set screw retention. Making it more difficult are vendors who don't always include that much detail about the knobs they offer. Explaining what to expect and how to decide such matters is the subject of this informative article at Philadelphia Luthier Tools & Supplies.

The question gets asked often enough that I thought it might be handy to have the answer here in "Tips and Tricks". Actually, I thought about doing it some time back, but I have the attention span of a butterfly so here we are  :laughing7:

It's surprisingly easy with some pots to push the guts right through the pot via the shaft, tearing off the rear housing in the process, if the knob doesn't match the pot and you try to force it on anyway. Also, some bad advice about bending a pot's split ends together to facilitate a knob's fit gets passed out from time to time, too. Don't want either of those things happening.

Here is the stuff to know. Admins feel free to sticky in Tips and Tricks

There are 4 types of pot shafts and knobs.

Solid Shaft
1. Metric - 6mm
2. Imperial - 1/4 in

Split Shaft
3. Metric - coarse 18 spline
4. Imperial - fine 24 spline

Alpha pots are metric
CTS pots are imperial
Bournes pots can be had either way in a lot of their offerings

You're right. And thanks for the tips, it will surely help newbies like me. I have been guilty of the first one once and learned the lesson the hard way.

To me, this is one of the dumbest thing about assembling a guitar. After everything else, putting the knobs on should be about the easiest thing in the world.

It's a source of endless frustration.
