Black Korina!

Ok, I might just have a bit of a problem and need to stay off the Warmoth site. I was clicking around the unique choice tops and accidentally clicked on the Black Korina tops....and here we are. I had dismissed Black Korina as a top since I have another brand body in the wood and it doesn't really have much figure. Well clearly Warmoth has a way better selection. I found this amazing figured top to go with the roasted swamp ash and dark wood laminate border. It's cut for a Gotoh/Wilkinson VS100 tremolo, which I'm excited to try.

If you're looking for maximum access to the high frets, I am a huge fan of the .720 Mod with the Contour Neck Heel option, it is wonderful.

I am trying to figure out a way to make the black in the grain pop a bit more for contrast. Does anyone have finish suggestions that might help? I love the top as it is, but just want to add some more contrast. I have a feeling just Tru Oil would go pretty far on doing that, but trying to explore other ideas.

Whoever buys the wood for Warmoth does a superlative job. There are a couple other manufacturers out there who have limited offerings of a few of the same species, but they're always disappointing. Warmoth is really a wood-lover's paradise.

If this is your first Wilkinson VS100, you're in for a treat. They're very good bridges.

Limba is a moderately open-grained wood, so if you want to exacerbate the grain, a good way to do that is to use a tinted grain filler. Many suppliers offer it tinted, or you can buy a neutral product and tint it yourself. Leaves the main color of the wood alone, while making the grain show up more prominently.

Hehe! That really is a nice piece, isn't it? I don't think it needs any exaggeration at all.

I can't help with the technical stuff but I have a similar body I bought from the showcase already finished in gloss and if I could do it again I would go with oil too. As much as I like how the wood looks the gloss finish doesn't suit black limba (IMO) and that's why I haven't used it. It's good yours came unfinished.

Some of this stuff has the same beauty as the finest laminated woods. You got a particularly nice one. I'd think any clear finish would bring out the best in it. Congrats.

That would be Ken himself, in my experience, and while I was there, he rejected close to 50% of what's delivered because it doesn't meet his exacting standards.

I'd hit it with some black grain filler, I think it make figured korina that much better... :toothy12:

DangerousR6: What type of black grain filler did you use on that guitar?

TonyFlyingSquirrel and Cagey: Warmoth definitely picks some exceptionally figured woods!
