black korina body

I'm happy to report my body arrived. It's my first Warmoth product of any kind and it certainly is of a good quality and with nice grain. But unfortunately I'm not so excited about the color. It's definitely not what I expected. It's funny really because I took a picture of it and it's closer to what Warmoth showed but in real life it's quite a bit more yellowish. I wanted it to be a bit more red brown. I consider my screens reasonably calibrated because I need that for work occasionally and in any case it looked OK on a few other screens as well so I don't think that's a calibration issue. It just looks different in real life. I tried to adjust colors slightly to maybe better show what it looks like really. It does say black to yellow burst in specifications.

Perhaps it will grow on me with time, I don't know. Right now I'm waiting for my neck to arrive (it looks like both packages were sent at the same time but one was still somewhere in San Diego or something when I already opened the other at home in Europe). Then I'll see what to do about it and if I need to adjust my plans slightly.

I think that's going to grow on you very easily. That's a sharp body.

Plus, you're going to put a pickguard and some hardware on there, not to mention the neck. That'll all change the presentation of the thing.

Hmmm--Never seen any reddish brown Korina unless it's dyed. Why would you think that ''black-to-yellow '' would be 'red brown'? Hope you'll grow to love that body 'cause it's a pretty glorious hunk of wood! Enjoy the project!  :icon_thumright:

Looks great.  I love korina guitars.  What type of pickguard are you considering??

I wasn't thinking much about black-to-yellow burst, I just liked what I saw on the picture and it was not quite what I got. I was after what the first picture shows (Warmoth original), the second one is more like what it looks in real life. One of the drawbacks of online ordering I guess.

Anyway, not all is lost obviously, it's still a nice body, just, you know, you work on this idea for a long time, browse this addictive homepage of theirs for months, make mockups, curse lack of funds to buy them all and when you finally get it in your hands it's just not exactly what you imagined. It is a slight disapointment to start with. But this is still a long way to being finished I just hope there will be no more 'surprises'.

Err, well, my first idea was not exactly what you'd consider a typical pickguard. And to be honest that's the area that I was not exactly sure about and I bought a black one as a backup. So this better turn out better than expected to make up for what I don't like about the color! But I'll wait for my neck to arrive first to see what that looks like.

I fully expected you to have a "facepalm" moment when you looked at the shipped body. Maybe you missed it or perhaps you just did not want to bring it up immediately after my initial disappointment. Come on, I can take it.  :icon_tongue:

I think the guitar ib the 3rd photo looks best.  Just my 2 cents

Agreed :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
I love BK and that is a nice piece of timber
I am sure it will grow on you...

It looks good doesn't it? Trouble is it only look this good if you take a picture of it. That's what I've been trying to say. My picture also looks a lot like the official Warmoth picture. But in reality it looks something like the second picture that I color corrected to sort of match the look of the body when you hold it in your hands. And that lighter streak in the middle doesn't stand out like it does on the picture. Go figure.

That's what it was supposed to look like roughly except that it's not going to have a 2 point tremolo (that's the detail I was expecting Cagey to notice immediately on my delivered body but I guess he missed it  ). It's not going to be an overnight job though as I haven't sourced all the hardware yet at all.

Wow, that's gonna be sharp.

I don't think the yellow streak in the middle is out of place, especially with the gold pickguard/hardware and a dark neck. Judging from your mockup, it looks like everything will fall into place beautifully.

No, I didn't miss it, but I've been tryin' real hard to be the shepherd. The tyranny of evil bridges is not something I can always control, particularly once a commitment has been made. So, I let it go. Whaddaya gonna do about it now, anyway? Buy a new body because I bitched? Of course not. So, I'll let you learn the same way I did - by making mistakes here and there. Don't worry about it. You'll be fine.

I was thinking of the usual Wilkinson option but that bridge is for some reason not gloss gold and I don't think I'd like it. I like Schaller 2000 a lot but Warmoth wouldn't route for it and I'm not doing it myself, not on the first project anyway. And since I'm unlikely to use tremolo anyway I figured it should be OK to go vintage. Hardtail wasn't an option with this body of course.

Don't worry, I'm taking notes. Next one will definitely not have a vintage bridge. If you're going to have lots of guitars they should at least be different and hopefully not just in color. And even with these planned drawbacks of my current build it should turn out to be an improvement over my only other S-type guitar, a '93 still made in USA Peavey Predator (I don't remember ever using whammy bar on that one either, it has some kind of a 4 screw bridge BTW).

Oops, I've just realised I forgot to order my trem cover. And it took a while to locate where to order it, it's in the pickguard section. Was expecting it in the hardware&more section, that's probably why I missed it. Oh well.

So this neck arrived a couple of days ago. It's afra with a rosewood fingerboard. OK, afra is not the most exciting wood to look at but it was very cheap (well, at least before my dear government decided to add the usual 25% on top of that and the shipping combined it was cheap) so if I fail to install those inserts for machine screws properly and if my peghead intentions go wrong it won't be such a disaster.

Fret ends look very acceptable out of the box I think so I will not be in any rush to get my frets done. Fretboard feels fine also but man I've got some seriously deep grain there. I only have one classical guitar with a rosewood fretboard but that one is absolutely smooth compared to this one.

Huh, that is a really rough fingerboard, never seen one that extreme
