any idea how i can check/confirm if the body is made of basswood and alder - on a mij strat?

appreciate any suggestions.

It says the body is in ash

are you saying the one from ebay is the ST57-TX/ALG from the 'vintage collection'? how did you match that up?

Its true, basswood sounds great but It is not very heavy duty
 
The only experience I've had with Basswood is this Jackson that I've had for about 15 years.  It got dinged up really easily and it really howled and fed back with any overdrive or distortion.  I thought it was the pickups so I replaced them with a JB 59 set, still got feedback.  Took everything out of it and completely shielded it and replaced ALL the electronics with CTS, which helped some but it will still howl if you leave it on the distorted channel too long without playing anything.  Might just be an anomaly with that guitar though.
