So after seeing a couple beautiful bodies in the showcase (see attachments below) I figured out exactly how I want my P-bass to look. Alder body flame or quilt (it's a tossup) top with tobacco burst finish and natural mask binding. Top routed (i know some of you will be very mad about that) with a vintage pearloid pickguard as seen on the one jazz below. I'd actually have bought that explorer if I was more convinced it'd look good with the PJ pickup layout.

The neck will be Canary with a rosewood board, slim profile, 1 11/16" nut. I think the yellow of the canary will suit the body finish very nicely.
Since I was originally thinking of building a tele bass, I thought I might stick with the tele headstock. But then I saw the new warheads and I thought they were pretty cool. But then this bass is going to be all kind of vintage classy, so I thought maybe just stick with the traditional headstock. What do you guys think? If anybody wants to whip one up in photoshop that'd be cool.

i dont think the warhead is availible for basses. just the 7/8 scale guitars

It is. It's actually been an option for a very long time.

i stand corrected.

IMHO a tobacco burst on a classic body style should have a reverse headstock at the most.

Top routed is a bit different on a J-Bass.  On a Strat, Tele, or P-Bass, it means the pickguard is absolutely necessary because the controls, pickups, or both are mounted to the pickguard.  On a J, it just means there's a metal control plate and the pickguard is still optional.  For my $.02, if you decide not to use the pickguard and just the control plate, a pickguard is still necessary for placement/alignment of the control plate.

I didn't mean to confuse: it will be P body, just with the same finish and PG color on that jazz. They just didn't have any figured top P's w/ the tobacco burst in the case.

Definitely the standard P/J headstock!

Personally, I can't stand Tele headstocks, and the Warhead is just as ugly. :dontknow:

The standard Fender headstock would look nice.  Reversed might be nicer.

How about a thin laminate of rosewood on the headstock to match your fretboard?
